Role Description
About the Role
This role will have a significant impact on the shape and future direction of our programme of education and research in digital engineering and manufacturing. We are seeking a suitably qualified individual who will join the management and teaching team of our MSc courses (including MSc in Digital and Technology Solutions and MSc in Management and Information Systems). The role will involve you becoming the Course Director for the MSc in Digital and Technology Solutions and you will also build an independent portfolio of research and PhD supervision. Your contribution will be in the area of Cyber-Physical Systems and Internet of Things (IOT) within the context of manufacturing and maintenance.
In turn, you will have exciting opportunities for career development in this academic position, and to be at the forefront of world leading research and education, joining a supportive team and environment.
About You
You will have a PhD or EngD in a relevant subject and a growing track record in conducting research projects, and publishing the results. A sustained track record in winning and managing research grants, running collaborative projects, and publishing in peer-reviewed international journals is essential. With excellent written, oral, presentation and networking skills, you will be responsible for the development and delivery of research and high-quality teaching at postgraduate level so expertise in one or more of the following is essential within the context of manufacturing and/or maintenance:
- Intelligent and Embedded systems
- Ontologies, and data modelling
- IoT technologies
- Digital twins
- Cyber security
- Applied artificial intelligence
- Virtual and augmented reality
At Senior Lecturer level, you will be expected to provide leadership, such as course management, business development, preparing large funding bids, acting as a Principal Investigator on funded research projects and managing collaborative networks of researchers linked with industry. We particularly welcome applicants with related industry experience.
About Us
As a specialist postgraduate university, Cranfield’s world-class expertise, large-scale facilities and unrivalled industry partnerships are creating leaders in technology and management globally. Learn more about Cranfield and our unique impact here.
Cranfield Manufacturing (which includes major activities in Materials) is following the ambitious strategy of developing a roadmap for a Sustainable Manufacturing Sector for 2050 by applying fundamental science and thought leadership via conceiving and maturing the concepts of Smart, Clean and Green manufacturing solutions agnostically across all sectors and through all tiers of the supply chain with SMEs as well as OEMs. This is to support the national aspiration of Net Zero UK by 2050. We offer world-class and niche post-graduate level research, education, training and consultancy. We are unique in our multi-disciplinary approach by bringing together design, materials’ technology and management expertise. We link fundamental materials research with manufacturing to develop novel technologies and improve the science base of the manufacturing research. Our capabilities are unique, with a focus on simulation and modelling, and sustainability. They also include work in composite manufacture, metallic glasses, nano-materials (graphene, coatings and sensors), low energy casting, thermal barrier coatings and Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM).
This role will be part of the Centre for Digital Engineering and Manufacturing (CDEM). Our vision is to become a world-leader in Digital Engineering for postgraduate education and research. Our mission is to be the postgraduate university of choice for students, staff, business, government and academic partners for learning and research in through-life digital engineering capability in multiscale modelling, life cycle simulations including molecular dynamics to factory/process system simulations, digitalisation of through-life manufacturing, digital twins, artificial intelligence and virtual and augmented reality. The long-term themes and interests for CDEM include:
- Digitalisation of through-life manufacturing: data mining, ontologies, knowledge base, NDT, robotics, additive manufacturing, etc.
- Complex systems and optimisation: data analytics, risk and uncertainty quantification, life cycle simulations, factory/process system simulations.
- Digital twins and AI: digital twins, AI and autonomous systems, IoT, cloud computing, blockchain.
- Virtual and augmented reality: adaptive visualisation, dynamic content creation, digital work instructions, innovative training.
