Maritime Engineering

Engineer excellence in maritime

Are you an experienced academic with a passion for Maritime Engineering?  The Department of Civil, Maritime and Environmental Engineering (CMEE) is the ideal place to make your impact. We have brand new, world-class facilities, a vibrant research culture, and are committed to all our students achieving their best. Within this environment we will support you to further develop your academic career while you play a pivotal role in enhancing our research strength.

Following the retirement of a renowned colleague we are looking for individuals with interests that make use of our new National Infrastructure Laboratory fully equipped with its state-of-the-art large structures hall and advanced materials testing laboratories OR our fully instrumented 138 m wave/towing tank, co-located with CMEE on our Boldrewood Innovation campus.

We seek individuals that address future maritime research challenges for:

  • discovering new approaches to design safer, stronger, more sustainable ships;
  • finding a decarbonised and emission free future for the world’s shipping fleet;
  • optimising hydrodynamic performance of ship hulls, foils and propulsion systems;
  • exploring the future of lean crewed and autonomous vessels;
  • looking for sustainable solutions for marine renewables and other ocean resources;
  • applying AI and ML techniques to operations, design and manufacturing; and
  • designing future ships, yachts and high performance craft.

Maritime is a core strategic strength of the University with the Southampton Marine & Maritime institute bringing together a community of over 400 academics across all faculties. CMEE as part of Engineering was ranked 4th for power and GPA in UK REF2021.

We are a team that ensures our student cohort are educated to the highest of standards and are looking for individuals who want to keep our programmes and modules at the cutting edge of maritime engineering education while sustaining our high student satisfaction.  We offer access to all world leading laboratories and facilities in the School of Engineering.

To make the most of this exciting role, you’ll have a proven ability to attract significant research funding, deliver publications of highest quality and with significant impact.  A committed educator, you will be eligible for a Fellowship of the HEA.  Highly organised, with strong communication skills, you’ll be ready to manage and motivate and able to contribute to the leadership of the School, Faculty  and University.

In return we help you shape a role that’s uniquely tailored to your interests and lifestyle. As a university with an Athena SWAN silver award we are recognised for our commitment to improving equality for all in science and engineering.  Our comprehensive benefits package also includes a contributory pension scheme, generous holiday allowance, subsidised health and fitness facilities, a cycle-to-work scheme and a range of discounts.

Please include (i) a research statement, (ii) a teaching and citizenship statement highlighting areas of interest in education and willingness to contribute to departmental, school and university activities and (iii) a statement addressing your commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusivity. You can enter these statements in the textboxes provided in the online application form. Alternately, upload documents (no more than 1 page per statement) and provide a summary of these statements in the textboxes. All three statements are required for your application to be considered. As part of these evidence:

  • future research interests/plans (including grant capture);
  • past research activities demonstrated by journal publications and funding portfolio;
  • your ability to develop/deliver innovative teaching and assessment;
  • that you are caring and can support students (UG/PG) and colleagues; and
  • that you can work well in a diverse team and can build an inclusive department; and
