Chair Professor / Professor / Associate Professor / Assistant Professor in History of Science

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) is a government-funded tertiary institution in Hong Kong. It offers programmes at various levels including Doctorate, Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees. DEPARTMENT OF CHINESE CULTURE

Chair Professor / Professor / Associate Professor / Assistant Professor in History of Science / Medicine / Environment in Modern China (two posts) (Ref. 221101006)

The Department of Chinese Culture is part of the Faculty of Humanities.  Its mission is to offer high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate programmes that provide interdisciplinary training in the study of Chinese history and culture. Currently, the Department offers PhD and MPhil programmes, a taught-master degree programme, a major degree programme in Bilingual Interdisciplinary Chinese Studies, a minor degree programme in Chinese Culture, and university-wide general education courses. Duties

The appointees will be required to:

(a)   engage in teaching aspects of Chinese history and culture and undertake related pedagogical activities at undergraduate and postgraduate levels;

(b)   engage in programme / curriculum design and development, consultancy projects and other scholarly activities that help promote the Department’s interests;

(c)   undertake scholarly research in his/her area(s) of expertise;

(d)   contribute to the strategic development goals of the Department and management of departmental affairs; and

(e)   perform any other duties as assigned by the Head of Department or his/her delegates.

(f)   Appointees at Chair Professor or Professor level are expected to play a leading role in academic and research development of the Department.

Qualifications

Applicants should:

(a)   a PhD in a relevant discipline;  

(b)   a strong commitment to excellence in teaching and learning;  

(c)   relevant post-qualification teaching and research experience and an excellent record of relevant academic achievements; and  

(d)   an excellent command of both written and spoken English and Chinese.

Applicants for appointment at Chair Professor level should demonstrate an outstanding level of scholarly accomplishments and have acquired an international reputation as one of the most distinguished scholars in his/her field of specialization, with proven academic leadership and ability.

Applicants for appointment at Professor or Associate Professor level should have substantial years of relevant post-qualification experience and an excellent record of relevant academic and/or research achievements. Applicants with less experience may be considered for appointment as Assistant Professor.

Conditions of Service

A highly competitive remuneration package will be offered. Initial appointment for Assistant Professor will be on a fixed-term gratuity-bearing contract. Re-engagement thereafter is subject to mutual agreement. An appropriate term will be provided for appointment at Professor / Associate Professor levels. For appointment as Chair Professor level, terms of appointment and remuneration package are negotiable.
