The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) is a government-funded tertiary institution in Hong Kong. It offers programmes at various levels including Doctorate, Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees. Assistant Professor in History of the Qin-Han period / Social-Economic History of Modern China / Study of Visual Culture or Films of Modern China (three posts) (Ref. 221031006)

The Department of Chinese Culture is part of the Faculty of Humanities. Its mission is to offer high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate programmes that provide interdisciplinary training in the study of Chinese history and culture. Currently, the Department offers PhD and MPhil programmes, a taught-master degree programme, a major degree programme in Bilingual Interdisciplinary Chinese Studies, a minor degree programme in Chinese Culture, and university-wide general education courses. The appointees will be required to:

(a)   conduct research and actively pursue external research grants, such as General Research Fund, as Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator;  

(b)   provide quality teaching at undergraduate or postgraduate level;  

(c)   contribute to departmental service; and  

(d)   perform any other duties as assigned by the Head of Department or his/her delegates.  


Applicants should:

(a)   have a PhD in a related discipline;  

(b)   have demonstrated promise of a high level of creative ability in research and teaching in some subdivisions of his/her field;  

(c)   be able to demonstrate effective classroom teaching skills; and  

(d)   have an excellent command of both written and spoken English and Chinese.  

Conditions of Service

A highly competitive remuneration package will be offered. Initial appointment will be on a fixed-term gratuity-bearing contract. Re-engagement thereafter is subject to mutual agreement.
