We are delighted to welcome applications for a research post in the area of Inclusive Ageing within the project ‘Promoting inclusivity in pension protection and other forms of saving among men and women from black and minority ethnic communities in the UK: a mixed methods study’, funded by the ESRC.

The overall aims of this project are to improve the inclusivity of individuals from Black and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities in pension policy planning, and to address the gap in our understanding of the socio-economic factors affecting pension protection among current and future generations of older individuals from BAME communities in the UK. This will be achieved through new analysis of empirical data, including individuals’ own narratives about financially preparing for later life. The project is led by Professor Athina Vlachantoni, and Dr Yuanyuan Yin is a Co-Investigator.

The successful candidate will contribute to providing new empirical evidence on the accumulation of financial resources across the life course and how this varies for different age groups of women and men in BAME communities.

This research position will be based in the Department of Gerontology, within the Faculty of Social Sciences. The work is led by Prof. Vlachantoni in coordination with Dr Yin. You will be part of a supportive group including another project Researcher, the Manager and Knowledge Exchange Coordinator of the ESRC Connecting Generations project, and other Faculty members, both within Southampton and partner institutions.

To be successful in this role you will have, or will be close to completing, a PhD (or equivalent professional qualifications) with strong statistical component in a relevant discipline (e.g., gerontology, statistics, demography, economics, social policy). Essential attributes for the role are: knowledge and experience in using bivariate and multivariate statistics in research; knowledge and experience in conducting and writing a critical literature review; being skilled in the use of SPSS or other statistical software; the ability to plan and organise work independently and as part of a team; and the ability to write research presentations and papers. Additionally, experience in the analysis of the Understanding Society and/or the Family Resources Survey would also be an advantage.

The University of Southampton holds an Athena SWAN Silver Award demonstrating commitment to equal opportunities in the workplace.

Applications will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon completion of PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Prof. Athina Vlachantoni, email: A.Vlachantoni@soton.ac.uk

You should submit your completed online application form at https://jobs.soton.ac.uk. The application deadline will be midnight on the closing date stated above.
