The Opportunity

The Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning, from its foundation as the Department of Architecture in 1918 has been an internationally acknowledged centre for intellectual, scientific and aesthetic research in architecture and the built environment, which attracts the highest quality applicants in Australia. It is consistently ranked among the world's best schools of Architecture and built environment.

The School is focused on the built environment and uses the methods of architecture, design, planning, science, art, engineering, IT, and social sciences to analyse, understand and design innovative environments. We have one of Australia's most recognized research groups focused on architectural history and theory, and one of the best university laboratory infrastructures for research and design in the built environment, including our Lighting Lab, Spatial Audio and Acoustics Lab, Innovation in Applied Design Lab, and the Indoor Environmental Quality Lab. We have a major and ongoing investment in the Design Modelling and Fabrication Lab, including architectural robotics. Our range of disciplines enables us to respond to the great and conflicting global challenges of our time - health and sustainability.

We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Architecture who will make a significant contribution to research in Architecture at the University of Sydney. We are seeking a highly ambitious candidate who wants to join our team to consolidate our reputation and establish their own. The appointment will span three years. This position has been established through the generosity of the estate of the late Mrs E.M. Chettle, set up in 1978 to support postgraduate work in Architecture.

We are particularly seeking candidates whose own research experience and capabilities will complement and extend the School's existing and emerging strengths in Architecture. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will have responsibility for research and project development, publication and engagement on research that will reinforce and extend our existing strengths:

  • Sustainable design
  • Design for health

The Postdoctoral Research Associate will also contribute to education by teaching and tutoring in architecture subjects.

About you

The University values courage and creativity; openness and engagement; inclusion and diversity; and respect and integrity. As such, we see the importance of recruiting talent aligned with these values and are looking for a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will have knowledge and skills that complement and extend our current research capabilities in Architecture. They will be open to contributing to collaborative research Projects across the School and university, or with external partners, while pursuing a suitably scaled Project of their own.

You will be responsible for advancing a research program related to your expertise; and developing work for publication with highly regarded journals and publishers. You will build research funding and capacity in collaboration with colleagues within the School and actively engage with events to promote collaboration and the research culture of the School.

You must have:

  • a PhD in Architecture or a cognate field (awarded prior to commencement of the position).
  • strong evidence of research capacity commensurate with opportunity, as demonstrated by a record of publications and participation in research events.
  • high level research skills and capacity to independently develop research projects from conception to grant application stage.
  • excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
