Job Description

The research fellow will carry out nanoscale fabrication and characterisation of two-dimensional (2D) crystals and multi-layer assemblies of 2D crystals (heterostructures). Fabrication includes manipulation of various species of crystal, such as, graphene, hexagonal boron nitride, and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) with use of state-of-the-art techniques and technologies. Characterisation may include optical (Raman, luminescence, and Fourier transform spectroscopy), scanning probe (AFM, EFM, MFM, STM), and electronic transport. All measurements may be performed at ambient or cryogenic temperatures. Also, the role will require the adaptation and provision of materials for internal and external collaborations, and reporting of findings to colloquium.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and implement research according to the overall group aim and deliverables as well as maintaining a current knowledge of relevant literature
  • Set up, maintain, and innovating experimental equipment. This will centre on nanoscale characterisation of emergent phenomena (scanning probe and optical experiments).
  • Fabricate samples/devices for measurement and collaborative work
  • Design and implement new fabrication techniques to add novel coupling of properties to 2D crystals and heterostructures
  • Document and analyse experimental results
  • Disseminate research findings
  • Contribute to general group maintenance. This includes providing training, resources management, and basic administration.
  • Be responsible for some safety management systems and risk assessments

Job Requirements

  • PhD degree in materials science, chemistry, physics, engineering or its equivalent
  • Demonstrable experience in micro- and nano- fabrication, characterisation and measurement techniques
  • Highly motivated, organized and responsible individual who can work independently as well as part of a team
  • Be prepared to supervised PhD students and junior post-docs
