Research Fellow, Nuclear Policy Research

Job Description

The Singapore Nuclear Research and Safety Initiative (SNRSI), a research institute within the National University of Singapore, is fully funded by the government and is tasked with building national capabilities in nuclear safety. The Nuclear Policy Research Group (NPRG) within SNRSI aims to bridge the gap between technical research and nuclear policy by exploring research in areas such as nuclear governance, safety, security, safeguards, and public perception.

We are seeking a senior researcher to conduct, support and supervise research projects, contribute and implement research strategies, and participate in the management of the NPRG to ensure growth and sustainability of the group’s expertise.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement research plans
  • Select appropriate methodologies and analytic tools for research
  • Develop and deploy data collection strategies including those involving human subjects, various survey methods, interview protocols, and literature reviews
  • Interact with research subjects, including government officials and other subject matter experts, in the research process and with research sponsors in communicating results
  • Direct and provide supervision for junior research assistants and associates in development of data gathering, analysis and interpretation efforts
  • Write peer reviewed reports and prepare other documents that describe the problem, research method, data sources, and results, including observations, conclusions, and recommendations

Qualifications

Competencies

  • Good knowledge of a broad range of topics in nuclear science and engineering such as: reactor and fuel cycle technology, other applications of radiation, effects of radiation and protection, environmental science, nuclear safety. Expertise in the topics listed would be an advantage;
  • Good understanding of the broad issues associated with nuclear energy: history and trends, industry, economics, global dimension and geopolitics, risks and benefits, political and societal issues;
  • Good understanding of national and international issues for the governance of nuclear energy: national responsibilities, international frameworks.

Requirements

  • A good engineering degree, preferably a postgraduate degree in nuclear engineering. A good degree in political science could be suitable if complemented by experience relevant to technical issues and the nuclear field.
  • Experience in scientific / technical work in nuclear science and engineering would be an advantage.
  • Experience in policy issues at the national or international level would be an advantage, such as the governance of nuclear activities, general energy issues, international relations, regulation of industry and markets. This experience should preferably result from participation in governmental work, e.g. in a national administration, in a technical agency, in the diplomatic service or in secondment to an international body.
  • Excellent command of spoken and written English. Additional fluency in any other South-East Asian language would be a bonus.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Experience in mentoring junior researchers.
