We are looking for a credible and driven academic, with the potential to become Director of the Surrey Ion Beam Centre (SIBC) within the next two years; experienced in the application and development of ion beam processes. The SIBC is recognised as a pre-eminent institution in the field of ion implantation and optoelectronics.

The SIBC is an EPSRC funded National Research Facility which has been in operation for over 40 years providing specialist ion beam processing and ion beam analysis facilities to both academic and industrial clients within the UK and beyond. The SIBC houses three accelerators, two used for implantation and one primarily for analysis and irradiation studies. New facilities on this tool include a high resolution PIXE line and a high resolution ToF ERD installed in 2022. You can find out more about the SIBC here https://www.surrey.ac.uk/ion-beam-centre.

The main beam-lines from the implanters have their end stations in a class 100 clean room to ensure contamination of semiconductor samples is kept to commercially acceptable standards. A fourth accelerator for ion implantation is currently being commissioned. The SIBC also houses two new bespoke single ion implanters designed specifically to support solid state quantum technology.

The aims of SIBC are

  • To promote and facilitate world class research in the field of ion beam applications, especially for the UK academic, commercial and industrial communities, but also for and with our international collaborators.
  • To allow users to undertake a wide variety of research using ion implantation, ion beam analysis and our extensive ancillary facilities.
  • Train and educate the UK community in the applications and technology of ion beams and provide a technology transfer to industry and academia.
  • Contribute to the prosperity and competitiveness of UK industry.

The SIBC currently supports a portfolio of over £100M of EPSRC grants and 45 companies using ion beams as part of their R&D programs. It provides ~3,500 hours of access to external users per year from the three accelerators. The SIBC is regarded as one of the premier sites worldwide having a very diverse capability with over 100 years of experience developing ion beam related processes to functionalise materials aimed at, but not limited to, the microelectronics and photonics markets.

It is expected that the appointee will:

  • Exploit and enhance the ion beam facilities available and complement the existing strengths in ion beam applications, materials processing, and analysis.
  • Collaborate with industry and multiple partners in academia, particularly in the areas of ion beam modification and analysis of a wide range of materials, their metrology, modelling and understanding the mechanisms involved; development of ion based manufacturing processes for solid state electronic and quantum devices; ion beam based analysis of materials in a wide range of fields.
  • Further develop the facility and ensure that it maintains its reputation in ion beam applications.

We can appoint at either Associate Professor Level 6 or Professor Level 7 to this post. You can learn more about pay scales here https://www.surrey.ac.uk/working-at-surrey/working-life.
