RDEB is an genetic disease involving mutations in the COL7A1 gene encoding type VII collagen, which results in extreme skin fragility due to the separation of the epidermis from the dermis following minimal trauma or friction.

This position, which is funded by a DEBRA Ireland Seed Funding award, is for a research project designed to target the significant problem of wound healing and pain management in RDEB patients, by developing an advanced dressing system for the treatment of RDEB wounds. The research assistant will work on synthesis and characterization of an injected hydrogel, development of painkiller encapsulated hydrogel dressings, and evaluation of the drug release profile and the pain release effects in vitro.

The Research Assistant will be based in the UCD Charles Institute of Dermatology and will work under the supervision of experienced researchers in Prof Wang's group and under Prof Wang's supervision directly.
