Teaching Fellow in English Language and (Applied) Linguistics / Language and Professional Communication (Ref. 220929017)

The Department of English and Communication within the Faculty of Humanities at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University has a long history of conducting cutting-edge research in language and communication and producing high quality graduates for the professional workplace. With a team of around 27 full-time academic staff, our focus areas are professional communication and applied language studies, and we provide teaching to undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes. The Department is now inviting applications for the position of Teaching Fellow in English Language and (Applied) Linguistics / Language and Professional Communication.

Duties

Theappointee will berequired to:

(a)   teach English and applied linguistics subjectsin the above-mentioned areas. The successful candidate should also be able to teach some of the following subjects: Analysis of English Pronunciation; Grammar and Meaning; English Lexis and Semantics; Testing and Assessment; Language Development and Use; English as a Global Lingua Franca, Technical and Web-Based Writing, English for Management; Introduction to English-Speaking Cultures; Drama for Language Learning; Language Arts for Creative Community Projects or any other subject(s) on the theory of linguistics, applied linguistics and communication;  

(a)   serve as a member on programme teaching teams, and assist in the development / updating of teaching materials;  

(b)   play a leadership role in one of the Department’s programmes;

(c)   participate in and contribute to other academic and administrative activities in the Department as and when required; and  

(d)   perform anyother dutiesasassignedby the Head of Department or his/her delegates.  

Qualifications  

Applicants should have:

(a)   at least a master’s degree and professional qualification in a relevant discipline; a PhD degree in a relevant discipline will be an advantage;  

(b)   not less than three years of post-qualification teaching experience at tertiary level;  

(c)   an excellent command of spoken and written English; and  

(d)   good subject knowledge, skills and competence in English language studies and/or applied linguistics.

(e)   Possession of the ability to teach one of the Departments’ foreign language subjects (i.e. French, German, Spanish) will be an advantage.  

Conditions ofService

A highly competitive remuneration package will be offered. Initial appointmentwill be on a fixed-term gratuity-bearing contract.  Re-engagement thereafter is subject to mutual agreement.
