The Department of Visual Studies (VS) offers a multi-disciplinary course of study, focusing on art history and film art. VS admits about 30 undergraduate, MPhil and PhD students each academic year. The BA (Hons) in Visual Studies curriculum emphasises the history and theory of visual arts and culture in Asia and beyond from ancient times to the contemporary period. It also offers students practical, object- and skill-based learning through studio practice, video production, curating and internships. The Department offers one MA in Curating and Art History and another MA in Creative and Media Industries. VS is inviting applications for a position of Research Assistant Professor to contribute to teaching and research in the areas of creative and media industries.
The appointee is expected to:
- teach relevant courses at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and supervise undergraduate and/or postgraduate final projects;
- to conduct research projects and publish outputs with high impact;
- to apply for grants and develop projects on knowledge transfer; and
- to contribute to service and development of the Department.
Applicants who can teach a wide range of subjects are of particular interest.
Applicants for the position should have a strong PhD in media and creative industries. Key criteria for shortlisted candidates include:
- Ability to design courses in technological innovation and platformisation of the media industries and be able to teach one to two film courses in the curriculum of the Department;
- A proven record of research potential in media and creative industries;
- Knowledge of contemporary Hong Kong policy initiatives in film and creative industries.
Shortlisted candidates are required to provide information about their research records, evidence of high-quality teaching in relevant subjects as well as research and publication plans.
The conditions of appointment will be competitive. The rank and remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits include annual leave, research leave, conference leave, medical and dental benefits, mandatory provident fund, gratuity, and incoming passage and baggage allowance for the eligible appointee. The appointee is entitled to apply for both internal and external grants in support of his/her teaching, research and conference activities.
Initial appointment will be made on a fixed term contract for a period of two years, starting from mid-January 2023. Subject to the University requirements, funding availability, review of appointee’s performance and mutual agreement, re-appointments may be made on fixed term contracts for periods of up to three years.
