We are seeking a talented mixed method researcher with training in qualitative research methods to join one of the UK’s leading primary care research groups at the University of Southampton.

You will be part of a world-leading institution with an international reputation for research, teaching and enterprise activities. The University of Southampton is a global top 100 university and one of the UK’s top 15 research-intensive universities.

The Primary Care Research Centre is a member of the NIHR School for Primary Care Research, a national collaboration between nine leading academic centres for primary care research in England that provides major opportunities for networking, training, and multicentre collaborations. In the 2021 REF we achieved the highest ranking for our unit of assessment with 94% of our research considered ‘internationally excellent’ or ‘world leading’.

Constipation affects 1 in 3 children in the UK, yet evidence suggests that provision of self-management support for parents/carers is sub-optimal. The successful candidate will lead the design, dissemination, recruitment to, and analysis of data from an online survey and semi-structured interviews that will examine parent/carers experience of self-managing their child’s constipation. Findings will contribute to a portfolio of research aiming to develop an intervention to improve support provision for parents/carers.

The research will be carried out under the supervision of Dr Leanne Morrison, Associate Professor Ingrid Muller and Professors Miriam Santer and Hazel Everitt for an NIHR SPCR funded grant. You will have opportunity to work alongside patient and public contributors, charities, and a consultant Paediatrician.

You will have in-depth understanding of health psychology or a closely related field. Your knowledge and experience will usually have been gained through a relevant MSc or PhD, but may also have been achieved via other research experience (in primary care or other health-care related research) normally supported by a relevant postgraduate degree. You will have demonstrated your ability to work independently and efficiently in a research context, and will have excellent written English skills with meticulous attention to detail. Previous experience using social media to recruit a diverse range of participants to online survey research would be an advantage.

This post is suitable for researchers with a strong background in health or social research or related discipline (e.g. psychology, sociology) and is available from 3rd October, or as soon as possible thereafter.

This position is being offered on a 12 month basis from 3rd October 2022 to 2nd October 2023:-

6 months full-time (35 hours) 03/10/22 to 31/03/23

6 months 0.8fte (28 hours) 01/04/24 to 02/10/23

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

Potential applicants who would like to discuss the post are welcome to contact Dr Leanne Morrison
