The Centre for Audio, Acoustics and Vibration is recruiting for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to play a key role in academic activities related to the Human Science Frontier Program grant &Good vibes: how do plants recognize and respond to pollinator vibroacoustic signals& an international collaborators of the University of Turin, and the Institute for Integrative Systems Biology, Valencia. The position will be based at the centrally located UTS Tech Lab in Botany and will report directly to Associate Professor, Dr Sebastian Oberst.

The Centre for Audio, Acoustics and Vibration (CAAV) is a new research centre devoted to applied research in audio, acoustics and vibration. CAAV will host brand new state-of-the art experimental facilities, and aims to develop national and international partnerships with universities and industry.

About the role

  • Working with plants and their interaction and communication with pollinators (insects) in course of the recently funded Human Science Frontier Program grant &Good vibes: how do plants recognise and respond to pollinator vibroacoustic signals?” (https://www.uv.es/institute-integrative-systems-biology-i2sysbio/en/news-1285990801509/Novetat.html?id=1286250906106)
  • Collaborative project with University Turin (Prof Barbero) and the Institute for Integrative Systems Biology (Dr Tomás Matus).
  • Strong interest to push the boundaries in physics-informed data science in relation to ethiology, and plant biology
  • Supervising UG student projects; group projects; setting up workshops for UG students, and the coordination of meetings and project assistance

About you

  • PhD in Physics, Mathematics or Electrical Engineering/Computer Science, or Theoretical Mechanics with an interest in bioacoustics/biomechanics or Biophysics, Mathematical Physics
  • Experience in mathematical modelling of nonlinear dynamical systems
  • Demonstrated expertise in sparse identification and data analysis/pattern recognition and physics-based time series analysis. as applied to the natural sciences/ biological systems
  • Desired experience in bioacoustics, specifically in biotremology.
  • Self-driven, motivated individual who is able to work autonomously or to contribute to the team;

Knowledge and/or experience in the following areas is highly regarded: 

  • Machine learning/computational intelligence, dynamical systems, complex dynamics
  • Plant physiology or entomology/biotremology with connection to plant behavioural responses to the environment

Remuneration & Benefits

Base Salary Range: $94,151 to $101,063 pa (Level A.3-4). This role attracts 17% superannuation (pension) in addition to the base salary.

This position is full-time and appointment will be made on a fixed term basis for 24 months.
