Job description

We are seeking a talented, highly motivated and enthusiastic Postdoctoral Research Associate with experience in the biological validation of molecular imaging agents to work in the Stasiuk group in the Department of Imaging Chemistry and Biology. The successful candidate will have extensive experience in in vitro cancer biology, in vivo tumour models, PET/MRI imaging, be self-motivated, able to work independently, and will have excellent written and verbal communication skills. The applicant must have a Ph.D. in cancer biology, molecular imaging, or similar. Applicants with an interest in PET tracer biology, experience with multidisciplinary research, including small animal PET/fluorescence/MRI imaging, are preferred. They should be able to demonstrate a proven track record of scientific publications and presentation at international research meetings.

This project sets out to biologically validate novel PET tracers and multimodal fluorescent/MRI agents targeted for prostate cancer.

The post holder will be responsible for the development and biological validation of a series of PET tracers and MRI contrast agents targeted to prostate cancer.  Validate the toxicity, binding affinity and specificity for prostate cancer cells (MTS, FACS). Undertake preclinical imaging in prostate cancer models using PET, MRI and fluorescence imaging and ex vivo histology and fluorescence for biodistribution.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a vibrant multidisciplinary research group within one of the premier biomedical imaging centres in Europe with access to state-of-the-art preclinical imaging facilities. The Department of Imaging Chemistry and Biology is part of the School of Biomedical Engineering and Imaging Sciences which has a vast array of small animal and clinical imaging modalities, supported by the cutting-edge equipment and core facilities at King’s. Our group has a track record of research excellence and we are dedicated to supporting the successful candidate’s career through assistance with Fellowship applications, networking events, and attendance at international conferences.

Key responsibilities

•       To plan and conduct a high quality programme of research in the development and biological validation of PET tracers and multimodal MRI/fluorescence agents for prostate cancer.

•       To undertake tissue culture experiments on agents in prostate cancer and other cell lines.

•       To perform in vivo experiments, using PET, MRI and IVIS systems.

•       To maintain accurate and complete records, including full characterisation of all new compounds prepared (FACS, MTS, microscopy, MRI and fluorescence, PET, histology).

•       To provide information required for the quality assurance of laboratory analyses undertaken.

•       To draft scientific presentations and publications.

•       To attend all research group and wider Departmental group meetings, as directed by the PI.

•       To perform systematic reviews of the literature.

•       In consultation with the PI, to contribute to the training of junior staff.

•       To work with, and to maintain close ties between ICAB Principal Investigators.

•       Pro-actively contribute to the team ethos of the School by collaborating with and offering support to other team members and groups and the laboratory management team, and accepting support from them.

•       Participate in teaching activities if the candidate so wishes.

•       Assist in maintaining good laboratory discipline and safety practices and set a professional example to others.

•       Take responsibility as part of the team for maintaining specific items of equipment and training others in their use.

•       General lab management.

•       Maintain accurate records of experimental work.

•       The possibility to participate in public engagement activities.

•       To participate in any laboratory duties commensurate with the grade as required.

King's has an outstanding reputation for world-class teaching and cutting-edge research. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) King’s was ranked 6th nationally in the ‘power’ ranking, which takes into account both the quality and quantity of research activity, and 7th for quality according to Times Higher Education rankings. Eighty-four per cent of research at King’s was deemed ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ (3* and 4*). The university is in the top seven UK universities for research earnings and has an overall annual income of more than £684 million.

King's has a particularly distinguished reputation in the humanities, law, the sciences (including a wide range of health areas such as psychiatry, medicine, nursing and dentistry) and social sciences including international affairs. It has played a major role in many of the advances that have shaped modern life, such as the discovery of the structure of DNA and research that led to the development of radio, television, mobile phones and radar.
