The Environment & Climate Hub is a new cross-cutting interdisciplinary initiative established by the University of Vienna in 2022. The Hub will connect researchers from faculties and centres and facilitating new interdisciplinary research within and beyond the University of Vienna. As Senior Scientist you will work closely with the two Hub directors (Thilo Hofmann und Sabine Pahl) and the board to identify core research questions and establish teams of researchers to create a critical mass and momentum which fosters excellent, integrated and impact-focused research. You will actively contribute to developing novel research proposals and opportunities and coordinate the activities of the hub. We are looking for a dynamic, open-minded, analytical, task-focused and socially skilled post-doctoral researcher who can play a major role in the strategic development of a research structure that tackles key challenges in the field of environment and climate.

This position (40 hours/week) is initially for a 6-year period. The possibility of being made permanent depends on the performance of the hub and strategic decisions by the university. The post starts on 1st of November 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Salary level according to collective agreement: §54 VwGr. B1 lit.b (postdoc). The standard starting salary is EUR 4,061.50 gross per month with two bonus payments as standard, but could be higher based on your expertise and experience (see https://personalwesen.univie.ac.at/en/jobs-recruiting/job-center/salary-scheme/ salary B1, 3b).

Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 lit. b (postdoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.

Job Description:
Leading, developing and coordinating the Environment & Climate Hub including responsibility for developing milestones and successfully delivering activities; defining priorities for the Hub in consultation with the Hub leads, Board and Advisors;

Analyzing research profiles and gaps regarding current members and their research portfolio as well as existing similar structures; strategically developing research ideas and opportunities with the hub members;

Supporting hub members in strategic research initiatives integrating different disciplines; identifying and connecting to research partners external to the University of Vienna;

Driving a communications and impact strategy in collaboration with the existing Environmental Research Network and the University of Vienna communications team, to engage wider audiences with hub research activities and outputs;

Travelling to represent the hub at relevant events and meetings through presentations and networking with the scientific and other relevant communities (e.g., policy, industry, civil society groups)


Profile:
You hold a PhD in a field of research relevant to environment and climate and have an excellent understanding of research funding and the process of scientific advancement in a university context with international experience.

You have experience of generating data and evidence using different methods and approaches (ideally including both natural and social sciences approaches) and an understanding of how such evidence is taken up by organisations outside the university.

You have experience of working in an interdisciplinary team, a track record of delivering research outcomes and an awareness of how research quality may be assessed.

You are a self-starter, dynamic and curious, with a high level of organizational skills, attention to detail, persistence and reliability. You are able to take decisions under time pressure and make things happen.

You are professional and able to communicate with different audience, from the general public to high-level officials, and want to join a motivated, international, and diverse group of researchers. You speak and write English to a research professional level and are sensitive to cultural differences. Ideally you have knowledge of additional languages (e.g., German)
