School of Nursing, Psychotherapy & Community Health

The School of Nursing, Psychotherapy and Community Health at DCU is a leader in its field with expertise in the provision of programmes in Nursing, Psychotherapy and Community Health. The programmes currently offered are:

Role Profile

The School is seeking to recruit at the level of Assistant Professor in Children’s Nursing. Appointment at Associate Professor level is possible for exceptionally qualified candidates. The appointee is expected to lead in child and family-focused nursing initiatives across teaching, curriculum design and enhancement, research, and administration in the School; and to work with external health service partners in supporting and advancing student learning. The appointee will be expected to contribute directly to children’s nursing undergraduate and post graduate programmes through research-led teaching, student mentoring and support, and supervision of student projects and research. The post holder will lead research and scholarship in children’s nursing and contribute to advancing the Schools child and family-focused research agenda. The post is based on the Glasnevin Campus and the candidate will report to the Head of School.

Duties and Responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not restricted to, the following:

Teaching and Learning

To contribute to the teaching and learning activity of the School of Nursing, Psychotherapy and Community Health by:

• Delivering modules in a manner consistent with the highest academic standards;
• Using a wide range of teaching and assessment methodologies which foster a deep approach to learning and which equip students with the skills and attributes needed to be lifelong learners;
• Working proactively to enhance and enrich existing modules and programmes;
• Contributing to the design and development of new modules and programmes;
• Providing research supervision for taught postgraduate students.

Research and Scholarship

To contribute to the research agenda and profile of the School of Nursing, Psychotherapy and Community Health by:

• Having clearly articulated research interests and research profile development plans
• Publishing new ideas and findings in high impact international journals
• Achieving measurable impact via citations
• Generating research income to support research initiatives;
• Contributing to research activities such as conferences, seminars etc.
• Attracting and supervising postgraduate research students
• Contributing to the research culture and environment in the School and, where appropriate, working collaboratively on research initiatives.

Service and Contribution to the University and Society

To contribute to the leadership, management and administration of the School of Nursing, Psychotherapy and School by:

• Contributing proactively to relevant School and University committees, working groups and meetings;
• Actively engaging in accreditation-related activities;
• Delivering management and school roles to a high standard;
• Representing the School in activities such as marketing activity and the recruitment of students;
• Developing relationships with stakeholders within and outside the University;
• Engaging in external academic, enterprise, professional, public sector and community
• activities to enhance the reputation and impact of the School.

Qualifications and Experience

• Applicants must hold a primary degree in children’s nursing and be eligible for registration as a registered children’s nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland.
• Applicants will be qualified to a post-graduate level and must have completed a PhD/Doctorate in a relevant field.
• Previous teaching experience at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level is required.
• Applicants will have a record of original research backed-up by publications in top-quartile international journals or, based on career stage, show exceptional promise in this regard. Applicants should demonstrate potential to establish an independent research programme and attract research funding from competitive research funding schemes.
• Applicants should also demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills, along with evidence of successful teamwork and a collaborative and collegial approach.
• Applicants to the Associate Professor level must have an established research portfolio with a track record of attracting external research funding, of publications in top-quartile international journals, and supervision of PhD/Doctoral students to completion.
