Measured in number of students and teachers, the Faculty of Science at the University of Helsinki is the largest science faculty in Finland. There are some 6,000 students taking a basic degree. Out of them, some 1,000 are postgraduates. There are some 500 international students, and over 200 researchers and teachers from abroad.

The Department of Physics is a large and multidisciplinary department that offers the most varied university programme in the physical sciences in Finland. At the beginning of 2022, the department employs about 200 people, of which 2 are academy professors, 23 are professors and 5 associate professors or assistant professors. The research at the department and the research-based teaching follow a high international standard, are nationally significant, and promote the mental and economic wellbeing in society.

The Department of Physics in the Faculty of Science at the University of Helsinki is now seeking to recruit a

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER

to the planetary science research group starting from February 2023 for a fixed-term employment for three (3) years. The postdoctoral researcher will work in a research project entitled Asteroids in the Deep: Characterisation of Sub-Surface of Near-Earth Asteroids the Moon and Mercury using radar observations.

BACKGROUND

The postdoctoral researcher will participate in radar-observation analysis and the development of numerical models to study radar scattering processes in planetary regoliths. The postdoctoral researcher is also expected to participate in teaching and supervision duties at the Department of Physics, with a possibility to enroll in official pedagogical training programs. CRITERIA

The appointee must hold an applicable Ph.D. degree in planetary science, astronomy, geophysical sciences, or a related field and possess good English communication skills. Previous experience in numerical modeling of electromagnetic scattering or related processes and programming skills using Python and/or Fortran are required. Experience with radar data analysis is preferred but not a requirement.
