Job description

An opportunity for an embryologist to join and support research undertaken by the pioneering human embryonic stem cell (hESC) research unit and Ovarian Cryopreservation Service, situated in the Assisted Conception Unit at the Guy’s Hospital campus. 

 

The focus on research is improvement in the outcome of fertility treatment, developing novel efficient techniques for PGD, and providing materials for establishing stem cell lines from embryos affected by clinically relevant genetic disorders, under GMP conditions. 

 

The post will require working in a GMP laboratory. Experience of maintaining equipment and facilities is desirable, though training will be provided.

Key responsibilities

  • Work in accordance with the Code of Practice set out by the Human Fertilization and Embryology Authority (HFEA) and the Human Tissue Authority (HTA). 
  • Be responsible for the stock of human embryos donated for research.  
  • Ensure that all embryos are used before consent expiration date. Ensure that the supervisor is aware of consent expiration date at least a month in advance. 
  • Participate in maintenance of GMP laboratory.  
  • Participate in Ovarian Tissue Cryopreservation Service and research.   
  • Participate in preparation of required documentation for internal audits of King’s Human Tissue Authority Governance Group (HTAGG). 
  • Participate in preparation of required documentation for HFEA and HTA inspections. 
  • Participate in post HFEA and HTA inspection activities including Corrective and Preventative Action Plan. 
  • Take part in on-going research projects, as required. 
  • Ensure that all staff and workers receive appropriate training in the use of equipment and facilities and are aware of local Codes of Practice. Ensure that all staff are aware of the need to report accidents and incidents and forward any such documentation appropriately. 
  • Ensure all staff read and understand both risk assessments and Codes of Practice.  
  • With regard to work with genetic modification ensure that project licenses are obtained and adhered to. Liaise with Biological Safety Officers (local and College) as required. 
  • Ensure that project licenses are obtained and adhered to.  
  • Provide advice and training in the use of laboratory equipment and basic techniques to visitors, BSc and MSc project students, PhD students and staff within the School. 
  • Advise on the allocation of space and distribution of equipment and resource within the laboratory. Identify any works or provision that may be required as a result of change of use, in consultation with the Upper Management. 
  • Be responsible for maintenance of the laboratory. 
  • Advise on the purchasing of goods and services within the laboratory as required. 
  • Maintain service contracts for laboratory equipment, freezers etc. 
  • Co-ordinate the monitoring of the equipment in the laboratory. 
  • Advise on the availability and safe usage of equipment, techniques and facilities within the laboratory. Ensure continuity of background supplies.  
  • Monitor usage of core shared equipment and reagents (e.g. reprogramming reagents) and levy appropriate access charges from individual users.  
  • Monitor service provision by the College and take action to remedy any deficiencies in the service provided. 

Skills, knowledge, and experience 

Essential criteria  

1.       BSc in lab-based science with a background in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, cell culture, or related subject. 

2.       Experience in aseptic techniques in research laboratory environment 

3.       Knowledge and understanding of the HFEA and HTA Code of Practice 

4.       Knowledge and understanding of quality control, ethical issues, and regulations surrounding human embryo and human tissue handling. 

5.       Quality assurance policies and procedures competency. 

6.       Committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion, actively addressing areas of potential bias. 

 

Desirable criteria

1.       Experience in handling and micromanipulation of fresh and/or frozen human embryos and/or gametes. 

2.       Experience in cell culture, or stem cell culture.  

3.       Experience in tissue cryopreservation.
