The Finnish Museum of Natural History Luomus constitutes Finland’s largest research infrastructure specialising in biodiversity. Luomus preserves and accrues national collections relating to nature as well as offers them for use as research material, carries out academic outreach and environmental education, and serves as an expert body in questions pertaining to biodiversity. Luomus collections are among the world’s 50 most significant natural history collections. An independent institute of the University of Helsinki, Luomus has strong international networks and is a leader in citizen science. The University of Helsinki invites applications for the position of DIRECTOR to manage the operations of the Finnish Museum of Natural History Luomus as of 1 January 2023

The director of the Finnish Museum of Natural History applies an enthusiastic, inspiring and systematic approach to steering the institution, serving simultaneously as a partner to collaboration partners within and outside the University of Helsinki. The active analysis of changes currently taking place in the operating environment and the reshaping of operations form a significant part of the director’s duties.

Successful cooperation with the other leadership and staff of Luomus, the University community, the University’s senior leadership and stakeholders is based on interaction, openness, collegiality and objective-setting. The director carries the overall responsibility for managing the Finnish Museum of Natural History in accordance with the policies set by its board. The director of Luomus is a member of the University’s extended management group and, consequently, contributes to the management of the University as a whole.

PREREQUISITES FOR SUCCESS IN THE POSITION

Success in the position requires a strategic and future-oriented vision for the development of the museum as well as solid interaction skills. Excellent leadership and supervisory skills, as well as demonstrable experience of the effective application of collaboration, communication and agility to academic management and leadership in transformations are considered particular strengths.

The director must possess strong expertise in the natural sciences and the museum sector, as well as insight relevant to the international operating environment. The position requires proficiency in Finnish, Swedish and English. One of the requirements for the position of director is a doctoral degree. In addition, the appointee must have good leadership skills as demonstrated in practice.
