Uncrewed Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Engineer/Technician*

The University of Southampton is looking for an Uncrewed Aerial Vehicle Engineer to join the Soton UAV team on the FIREDRONE and CASCADE projects with the potential to work on other projects.

FIREDRONE will increase the safety, speed and accuracy of firefighters’ response to industrial fires and wildfires by developing a compact airborne robotic system for live monitoring of dangerous emissions in smoke, designing its operational procedures and providing demonstrations to fire emergency services.

CASCADE is the largest UK research programme focused on uncrewed aircraft. It is a collaboration between the University of Southampton and four of the top universities in the field of uncrewed systems.

Soton UAV is a research team consisting of academics, staff and post-graduate researchers/ students based at the University of Southampton.  We are part of the Autonomous Systems research group, a University Strategic Research Group aiming to achieve a global top five reputation and provide continuity of funding for world-class science and research in the area of autonomous systems.

We design, manufacture and fly uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) from a research perspective. Many of our systems make use of cutting-edge design methods, state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques and novel applications of technology. For example, in 2011, we designed the World's first 3D printed UAV (Sulsa) which has since undergone flight trials in Antarctica with the Royal Navy, and in 2016, we performed a flight display of our Light UAV (Spotter) at Farnborough International Airshow. For more info, please visit https://www.sotonuav.uk/. In 2020 we performed BVLOS trials of long range cargo uncrewed aircraft connecting islands to the mainland as part of the Covid-19 response.

It is essential that you have experience in the following areas: autonomous systems, autopilots and ground control software, engine testing, software design, system health and components life management, flight data analysis, with proven experience of successfully planning and progressing work activities.

There is one position fixed term for 12 months subject to funding restrictions.

Equality, diversity and Inclusion is central to the ethos in the School of Engineering. In recognition of our continued commitment to improving equality for women in science we were awarded an Athena SWAN Bronze award in 2013 and a second Bronze award in 2016.  The School of Engineering gives full consideration to applicants that wish to work flexibly including part-time and due consideration will be given to applicants who have taken a career break.
