The project aims to explore the role of hospitality businesses in connecting lives and building communities by identifying the potential opportunities for the hospitality business to play an influential role in supporting social connections.

The successful candidate will be working with Dr Lorna Wang based in the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, Prof Andrew King (Dept of Sociology) and Dr Kimberley Smith (Dept of Psychology) at University of Surrey as well as project partner Toynbee Hall London.

The position will be part of two research centres: Centre for Sustainability and Wellbeing in the Visitor Economy (SWELL) at the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management and The Centre for Research on Ageing and Generations (CRAG) in the Department of Sociology.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

This PDRA position will work on the project for 11 month and the key responsibilities of the position will be to:

  • Contribute to the development of the research project, specifically co-ordinating and liaising with the research partner organisation undertaking field data collection and delivering workshops to peer-researchers
  • Use appropriate research techniques and methods to collect data, in consultation with the research team members and project partner.  This may include qualitative interviews, observations, participatory methodology and interpretation of qualitative and quantitative data, computer-based data analysis, and desk/library research.
  • Writing-up results and preparing papers for submission to the project team, conferences, appropriate journals (ABS3/4*) and other outputs as required.
  • Plan and manage own research activity in collaboration with other members of the research team and research partner to ensure each work package is delivered on time
  • Carry out administrative tasks associated with the funding, for example risk assessment of research activities, organisation of project meetings and documentation.
  • Implement procedures required to ensure accurate and timely formal reporting and financial control.

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
