This is a unique opportunity to join the Primary Care Research Centre, as a Clinical Studies Officer (CSO) / Research Nurse, working on the TIGER trial (Trial of IGe tests for Eczema Relief).

The TIGER trial is an NIHR HTA-funded randomised controlled trial to find out whether dietary advice based on routine food allergy tests improve disease control compared with usual care in children with eczema. Participants (493 children with eczema between 3 months and 2 years of age) will be recruited from primary care (~84 GP surgeries) in and around Wessex, West of England and Greater Manchester Clinical Research Networks.

The post-holder will be the primary contact point for the parents/carers and children taking part.   They will be responsible for recruiting children into the study and supporting their parents/carers during trial participation and follow-up.  This will involve liaising with general practices, assessing children’s eligibility to take part in the study and arranging all follow-up including assessment visits at the patients’ GP surgery and in their homes.  After receiving informed consent from parents, the post-holder will randomise participants and for those children allocated to the intervention, perform skin prick tests and give dietary advice based on the results.

The role demands excellent interpersonal skills, an in-depth knowledge of the study protocols and procedures, meticulous record keeping and adherence to the regulatory codes of Good Clinical Practice.  You will be expected to be able to work flexibly (including some work out-of-hours), independently and as part of a wider multi-disciplinary team.  On a day-to-day basis, you will be working closely with the other Clinical Studies Officers working on this trial, as well as the wider study team and Trial Manager. You will be based in Aldermoor Health Centre (University of Southampton), but will be travelling to general practices and participants’ homes throughout Wessex.

The post is fixed term for 23 months and will be offered full-time or part-time as a job share from December 2022.

For an informal discussion about the post please contact Dr Ingrid Muller ( or Prof Miriam Santer (
