Sustainable and fuel-efficient next-generation air transportation demands a step change in aircraft performance. The ultra-high aspect ratio wings (UHARW) configuration is one key enabling strategy for improving aircraft aerodynamic efficiency and reducing fuel consumption and emissions. Unconventional aircraft configurations and advanced airframe technologies are required to address the large bending moment, and shear stresses in the UHARW structure. Under the EU-funded project Robust and Sustainable by Design Ultra-High Aspect Ratio Wing and airframe (RHEA), the strut-braced wing configuration is being studied to realize UHARW.

This position aims to investigate the aerostructural behavior of a strut-braced wing via high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics coupled with a structural model.  The research will show the wing's aerodynamic efficiency under different flight conditions. One particular focus will be on the interaction between wing and strut. The project will benefit from close collaboration with other partners, including a wind tunnel test of the strut-braced wing aircraft to be performed by other project partners.

You will have a Ph.D. in aerospace engineering or a closely related field, and extensive experience in CFD simulation, including meshing, parallel computing, and aerostructural coupling.

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
