This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, motivated individual with a track record in patient and public involvement in research, palliative care and/or dementia care research (or a related area) to join the Cicely Saunders Institute. The Institute is the first purpose-built facility for research into palliative care. The Institute benefits from a unique collaboration of palliative care and rehabilitation teams that brings together multi-professionals including academics, health and social care professionals, community organisations, patients and carers.

 

Palliative care and rehabilitation put both patients and families at the heart of care. We have built an innovative patient and public involvement (PPI) infrastructure with a diverse community of public contributors affected by serious illness. Our aim is inclusive involvement that celebrates diversity and maximises opportunities for the public and community to influence our research. 50% of this role is as a PPI coordinate for the public involvement activities at the Cicely Saunders Institute This includes supporting and facilitating patient and public involvement by providing advice and training for researchers, clinicians and public contributors, coordination of our online PPI forum, and organisation of public involvement activities with researchers and public contributors. The post-holder will work with a PPI research administrator and the PPI Executive Group co-chaired by a public contributor and Prof Catherine Evans.

 

The other 50% of the role is as a research assistant working with Dr Clare Ellis Smith, focusing on the research programme EMBED-Care – Empowering Better End of Life Dementia Care (funder ESRC). EMBED-Care is a joint programme between KCL and UCL. Prof Catherine Evans (KCL) co-leads the programme with Prof Liz Sampson (UCL). Dr Clare Ellis-Smith leads major workstreams, including feasibility and pilot of the EMBED-Care framework. The research assistant role will involve high level project support, including the feasibility and pilot trials, collecting, analysing and reporting research data (quantitative and qualitative); supporting participants; and preparing papers and reports from the work.

 

This post will be offered on an a fixed-term contract until 31st December 2023

 

This is a full-time  post– 100% full time equivalent. We offer flexibility for part-time working and opportunity to retain clinical links or responsibilities.

 

Key responsibilities

•       To be responsible for oversight of the Institute’s PPI strategy and activity, including the online forum and patient and public involvement group  

•       To be the point of contact for PPI for researchers and public contributors  

•       To develop and support PPI across departmental projects and activities including PPI resources, workshops and executive group  

•       To develop and disseminate Cicely Saunders Institute’s PPI activities including public facing materials (e.g. webpages, leaflets, social media) 

•       To contribute to and provide relevant training on PPI to researchers, students and public contributors  

•       To oversee expense and remuneration claims from public contributors  

•       To support delivery of the EMBED-Care programme, focusing on the feasibility and pilot trials of community-based palliative dementia care 

•       To support participant recruitment and processes of consent, data collection, and qualitative interviews with patients and carers.

•       To support analysis of qualitative and quantitative project data as directed by other members of the project team.

•       Communicate and liaise with the PhD Fellows, research assistants and investigators, as well as patients, families and referring clinicians.   

•       Proof and draft reports and publications for the management team, funders and other appropriate groups.

•       Work collaboratively with the EMBED-care project team at the Cicely Saunders Institute and UCL.

•       Travel to research sites and conduct research interviews in participants’ homes as needed. This may require travel to Sussex and Derbyshire.  

•       Ensure confidentiality and patient safety in accordance with GCP guidelines.

• Undertake any other reasonable duties, including assisting with other projects, that may be requested by Institute Director, Business Manager or their team.

Skills, knowledge, and experience

 

Essential criteria 

1.       A degree in health or social sciences or similar awarded to a high level (e.g. first or 2.1).  

2.       Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to adapt communication as appropriate to the situation.  

3.       Excellent relationship building skills, with public members, researchers and external networks 

4.       Excellent time management skills with ability to multi-task and prioritise and complete tasks within a set deadline  

5.       Experience of public involvement in research, including advising researchers and facilitating public contributors  

6.       Strong organizational and planning skills, with a proven ability to coordinate and deliver projects  

7.       Ability to work independently as well as part of a multi-disciplinary team including researchers, clinicians and patient and public contributors.  

8.       Experience of preparing academic reports and publications  

9.       A good understanding of qualitative and quantitative research methods. 

10.   Able and willing to travel in London, and Sussex and Derbyshire if required.  

Desirable criteria 

1.   A postgraduate qualification e.g. MSc or PhD 

2.   Understanding of the benefits and challenges of public involvement in palliative care and rehabilitation research  

3.   Relevant research experience – demonstrated by participation in research projects, research management or support specifically in palliative care or dementia care (or a related field).  

4.   Data analysis skills in managing SPSS data base (or equivalent) and descriptive and inferential statistics
