Northumbria is a research-intensive modern university with a global reputation for academic excellence.

Ranked in the UK top 50 (Guardian University League Table 2022 and Complete University Guide 2023), Northumbria recorded the biggest rise of any UK university for research power in the Research Excellence Framework (REF2021) for the second time in 2021 and is now rated within the top 25 in the UK.

At Northumbria, we embrace tomorrow. We pursue new thinking, forge new partnerships, create and exchange new knowledge, and find new solutions. Our inspirational academics, partners and students work together to tackle tomorrow’s challenges head on. We are ready for the future whatever it may hold. We are looking for future colleagues that share our ambition.

Ranked top 5 in the UK for research power (REF2021), the Department of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation is a vibrant and inclusive department, where staff are supported to make positive impacts on our students, through research-enriched curricula, and beyond academia, through World leading research.

Our research sits under the three intersecting themes of (1) Optimising Human Performance, (2) Promoting and Preserving Health and Wellbeing, and (3) Informing Practice and Policy. Particular areas of excellence include the musculoskeletal and neuromuscular adaptations to, and recovery from, exercise, the role of sport and exercise in the achievement and maintenance of optimal human performance in high-performing populations (e.g. elite athletes, military personnel, and astronauts), the use of functional foods to aid recovery from sport and exercise, the micro-political dimensions of sportswork, and the role of exercise in the management of chronic health conditions.

Our research and education are facilitated by strong internal collaboration and external relationships, with funding received from a range of sport national governing bodies and clubs (e.g. EIS, TASS, Newcastle United FC, Queens Park Rangers FC, Sunderland AFC, England Athletics), national/international organisations (e.g. Health Education England, UK Space Agency, Medical Research Foundation, National Institutes for Health Research, European Commission, European Space Agency), and industry (e.g. Cherry Marketing Institute, Danu Sports, Naturex, GlaxoSmithKline).

Working within the Department of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation, you will provide expertise in the area of Sport and Exercise Sciences. Applications are welcome from any discipline within this broad field, but are particularly encouraged in the areas of sport and exercise nutrition, biomechanics, human applied physiology, and sport and exercise psychology.  The post holder will undertake and publish high-quality collaborative research that is used to enrich the education of our students.  It is also expected that the post holder will participate in external activity to generate income and promote the subject.

Applicants should hold a first degree and be qualified (or exceptionally soon to be qualified) to doctoral level in a relevant subject, having expertise and specialist knowledge gained through demonstrable research excellence. A proven ability to deliver high quality research-enriched education within an appropriate field, alongside a strong research profile, is essential for this role.  As holders of an Athena Swan Bronze Award, we are committed to embedding equality, diversity and inclusion within our culture, and we encourage a flexible approach to work for our staff.

For informal enquiries about this post please contact the Head of Department, Professor Nick Caplan (nick.caplan@northumbria.ac.uk) or Head of Subject for Sport and Exercise Sciences, Dr Penny Rumbold (penny.rumbold@northumbria.ac.uk).
