Description

The Center for Genomics and Systems Biology (CGSB) at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) invites applications from individuals to be appointed as a Post-Doctoral Associate.  The position will be based at NYU Abu Dhabi and will be supervised by Dr. John Burt. The successful applicant will work with other Burt-supervised staff, which includes postdocs and other research staff from the NYUAD Marine Biology Lab, the NYUAD Water Research Center, and the NYUAD Arabian Center for Climate and Environmental Sciences. The Postdoc will join a diverse team of researchers that come from across the world, with projects spanning various coastal and marine ecosystems.

The Post-Doctoral Associate will study coral ecophysiology and microbial ecology in an extreme environmental setting and conduct novel laboratory (aquarium) and/or field experiments to advance scientific knowledge in this field and develop our understanding of the biology of corals in the Gulf, particularly around host-microbe interactions. The Postdoc will have wide latitude to develop research projects in areas of their particular strengths and interests and will be provided an annual research budget.

NYUAD is located on the Persian/Arabian Gulf shores, where corals and other reef fauna experience highly variable and extreme temperatures (ranging from 18 - 36 °C annually), as well as extreme salinity, frequent hypoxia, high turbidity, and recurrent bleaching. The UAE is bordered on its east coast by the environmentally benign Gulf of Oman, making this location an ideal setting for studying how marine organisms cope with and respond to extreme environmental conditions and the insights this may provide in our rapidly changing world.

To be considered, applicants must have:

  • PhD in Biology, Marine Biology, or equivalent from an accredited college or university.
  • Strong background in molecular ecology.
  • Strong publication record with first-author experience related to coral microbial ecology.
  • Dive certification from an accredited agency (PADI, BSAC, or similar organization), with >50 dives experience.
  • Valid Driver's License in home country
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to liaise with external stakeholders, employees, management, and students.

The terms of employment include a highly competitive salary, housing allowance, and other benefits. Applications are accepted immediately, and candidates will be considered until 10 October 2022.

Applications must include a cover letter with the research statement that responds to the required/desirable experience specified on the job description (maximum of two pages), curriculum vitae, transcript of degree, and the names and details of three references, all in PDF format.

To apply, candidates should submit the material online and via email to: John.Burt@nyu.edu with the email subject line "Coral Microbe Postdoctoral Application".
