Our Academic Development Advisor will be key to the development and delivery of DCAD’s teaching program in Academic Excellence. Providing teaching and development resources to support staff and postgraduate researcher development with a particular focus on the use of digital technology to create flexible, inclusive and accessible teaching resources.

Core responsibilities:

  • Recognised professional practitioner and service specialist in the area of academic and researcher development..
  • Implement changes to the design and development of service processes, techniques and deliverables for one or more service strands or project streams.
  • Provide specialist expertise and support with complexity of data and information sources, interpretation and analysis.
  • Contribute to development of operational service activities to ensure excellence in the stakeholder experience.
  • Collect and analyse stakeholder feedback to help define needs and requirements and the design and planning of services.
  • Internal and external relationship development and partnership working, networking and participation to engage and influence future services and the University reputation.
  • Identify and design activities to meet learning objectives and outcomes.
  • Deliver training, teaching and/or development delivery for stakeholders.
  • Maintain an awareness of current policy for University business goals such as widening participation and access, and provision of advice using specialist knowledge.
  • Contribute to and lead business meetings, working groups and sub-committees at departmental and operational service levels.
  • Responsible for managing small budgets for consumables and some capital items, keeping records and processing invoices. 

Role responsibilities:

  • Provide management for stakeholder service areas and/or processes ensuring a high-quality and timely service to all stakeholders, including prospective, existing and past students and staff.
  • Contribute to operational leadership teams and decision making to shape the nature and level of support services.
  • Analyse service data and provide reports to Service Heads making recommendations for improvement as appropriate.
  • Provide proactive and comprehensive input and support to Head of Services, School and/or Department to achieve strategic and operational priorities.
  • Provide advice to stakeholders in relation to University, School and or Department policy, procedures and regulations.
  • Ensure the review and improvement of systems and procedures in line with University, School, Department or unit frameworks.
  • Distribute service information and provide advice to stakeholders regarding compliance and regulations.
  • Ensure regulations and procedures are updated to take account of internal and external changes.
  • Coordinate and oversee committee working and deal with complaints.
  • Provide training and/or instruction to stakeholders.
  • Awareness of the external environment and sector best practice to support high quality services.  
  • Any other reasonable duties.  

In addition to the tasks described above, the Academic Development Advisor supports staff and postgraduate researchers through developing and delivering teaching in skills enhancement in the areas of teaching and research. This work includes:

  • Designing, delivering and evaluating teaching, both in online and face to face environments, including the development of asynchronous learning materials.
  • Responding to both participant need and the wider strategic needs within the institution to develop bespoke teaching as and when required.
  • Creating sector leading asynchronous teaching resources to support all students and staff develop research and teaching skills.
  • Working 1-2-1, with small and large groups to deliver teaching and development opportunities.
  • Working to support Postgraduate Researchers (PGRs) and research and academic staff across the areas of Academic Development.
  • Working in an agile fashion on strategic projects in teaching and development, which may include membership/leadership of working groups and undertaking independent research.
  • Engaging with continuous professional development and scholarship in teaching and learning to enhance and further DCAD’s academic development offer.

Specific role requirements

Normal working will be a mixture of face to face and online activities largely based online or at the Durham campus. It would be useful for role holders to possess a driving license in case any activities need to be provided face to face in other venues, for example for Doctoral Teaching Partnerships. Working pattern is flexible, normally 9-5 weekdays.

Person specification - skills, knowledge, qualifications and experience required

Essential Criteria

  1. Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to develop excellent working relationships both internally and externally. 
  2. Experience with digital development tools
  3. Educated to degree level (or equivalent experience).
  4. Continuing professional development required to maintain professional recognition.
  5. Professional practitioner with knowledge and expertise used to contribute to the delivery and development of services, events and activities within the organisation.
  6. Experience of implementing policy and procedures and involvement with future changes for a service area.
  7. Knowledge and experience of ensuring compliance with regulatory and organisational policy and guidelines. 
  8. Experience of providing specialist advice and guidance to a range of customers and colleagues, including more senior colleagues.
  9. Experience of being able to network effectively and develop strong and productive working relationships, to influence perceptions of the University.
  10. Knowledge of digital systems and processes and ability to share this knowledge
  11. Experience of designing, delivering and evaluating teaching
