The Biomedical Microfluidics group is based in the Life Sciences Building in Southampton and has a strong track record of developing methods for single-cell biology to enable biological discovery. The lab has a keen interest in understanding the nature and consequences of platelet heterogeneity.

An exciting opportunity now presents itself for a postdoctoral Research Fellow to investigate platelet adaptation in response to inflammation and infection, with the view to characterize platelet sub-populations driving thrombosis. This cutting-edge interdisciplinary project is in close collaboration with clinical and biomedical scientists, and builds upon recent and pivotal advances from the group (Jongen et al, Commun Biol, 2020, Vallejo et al, iScience, 2021, Jongen et al, Cell Mol Bioeng, 2021, Heemskerk & West, Arterioscler Thromb Vasc Biol, 2022).

The post-holder will possess expertise in one or more of platelet biology, flow cytometry, (single-cell) RNA-Seq, microfluidics, microscopy and phlebotomy. As required, time will be dedicated for learning new methods. These skills will be used to investigate platelet adaptation in response to priming and consequences for thrombosis propensity.

You will be motivated, educated to PhD* level in a relevant subject area and ideally have practical laboratory experience of platelet biology and flow cytometry, and may also have experience with droplet microfluidics and NGS, including single-cell RNA Seq.

*Soon to graduate PhD candidates are encouraged to apply too.

The position is full-time and for 36 months in the first instance. The start date is flexible but the successful candidate is expected to be in post by 1st December 2022 at the latest. Please visit www.jobs.soton.ac.uk to apply. For an informal discussion or to arrange a visit please contact Dr Jonathan West (J.J.West@soton.ac.uk).

*Applications will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon completion of PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
