About us 

At the School of Medicine and Public Health, our researchers, students and allied clinicians work across health and medical disciplines to prevent, cure and treat a diverse range of serious illnesses by translating research findings made in the laboratory into real health treatments and preventative strategies.

The School also works closely with the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) which has pioneered the integration of multi-campus university and hospital-based research.

These positions will be working within Hunter New England Population Health Research Group (HNEPHRG) which is co-located and collaborates with Hunter New England Population Health (HNEPH), Australia’s largest population health unit to conduct applied chronic disease prevention and health services research. Collectively, the group has been successful in obtaining nationally competitive grants annually from the NHMRC or ARC over the past five years (totalling >$20 million). The group undertakes complex interventions in a range of community and health care settings and has conducted some of the largest trials in the world to improve the implementation of health promotion policies and practices in community and clinical settings.

We are currently recruiting for 2 fixed-term, grant-funded Research Associate positions through to 30th November 2023.

Reporting to Dr Melanie Kingsland, Research Fellow in the School of Medicine and Public Health, you will be working on a number of research projects examining implementation of testing and treatment of hepatitis C in clinical settings and maternal health and contribute to work undertaken by an integrated team of Population Health researchers and practitioners.

In this role you will be responsible for:

  • supporting the development of ethics applications and reports
  • development, conduct and analysis of data collection
  • conducting literature reviews
  • report and publication writing and dissemination
  • contributing to grant writing

How will you inspire us?

You will have:

  • completed tertiary studies and have equivalent qualifications and/or professional experience in public health/population health, implementation science, behavioural science or related area 
  • demonstrated ability to contribute to a productive program of research, participating in applications for competitive research grants and disseminating findings through publications and other relevant outlets
  • ability to develop and maintain collaborative partnerships with partner organisations (e.g. health services) in order to undertake research that is relevant to partner needs and able to be successfully translated into practice
  • demonstrated commitment to Indigenous health and an understanding of the issues that impact on service delivery and research for Indigenous peoples

Previous research experience and demonstrated expertise in implementation science, and previous experience and demonstrated expertise in undertaking research on practice change in clinical settings will be highly desirable.

The roles will be located at our Wallsend Health Campus.

These are fixed-term positions through to 30th November 2023.
