Job Description

Fluorescent labels are essential tools in many branches of life science research. They provide high sensitivity for detection and are non-destructive to the target samples. Traditionally, fluorescent labeling is achieved by adding a chromophore to biomolecules such as proteins or nucleic acids. Conjugated oligoelectrolytes (COEs) are emerging as a new class of fluorescent molecules used to label cells and other specimens for non-invasive fluorescence imaging directly

COEs are defined by a linear hydrophobic conjugated backbone with polar ionic pendants at both terminals. They were firstly synthesized in Prof. Bazan’s group as two-photo absorption chromophores and later found to have biological applications. COEs are membrane intercalating molecules that span the lipid bilayer. The spontaneous intercalation into membranes from aqueous media results in significant increases in fluorescence emission. By tuning the molecular framework in the conjugated core of COE, COEs characterized by different emission wavelengths can be achieved, thereby gaining access to a range of different colors for fluorescent labeling.

This research aims to determine the labeling efficiency of various COE constructs across different biological samples, including but not limited to mammalian cells, bacteria of different membrane structures, and extracellular vesicles. The characterization and applications for these COE-labelled samples will also be investigated via different fluorescence-based techniques such as confocal microscopy, flow cytometry, and in vivo fluorescent imaging.


  • The candidate must have a Bachelor Degree with Honours or its equivalent 
  • Independent and motivated individual with good problem-solving skills 
  • With practical experience and/or knowledge of:
    • Biological chemistry, cell biology, or biochemistry.
    • Characterization techniques including absorbance/fluorescence measurements, flow cytometry or fluorescent microscopy
    • Microsoft Office
