Research Fellow (Health and Lifestyle)

The National University of Singapore (NUS) is recruiting a full-time researcher to be jointly appointed in the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health (SSHSPH) and Lloyd’s Register Foundation Institute for the Public Understanding of Risk (LRFIPUR). Founded in 1905, NUS is consistently ranked among the world's top 30 universities and Asia's top 2 universities. It is an innovative, research-intensive university with over 36,000 students from 100 countries.

The Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health is the newest of 16 schools/ faculties within NUS. The School builds upon over 60 years of experience in research, teaching and practice formerly as a department and for 8 years as an independent school. With a focus on the health of Asian populations, the School highlights:

• Identifying, developing and testing innovative solutions that integrate different research discoveries into potential public health actions;
• Collecting, collating and integrating data and evidence to inform public health policies;
• Implementing a broad-based curriculum that focuses upon the multidisciplinary nature of public health problems and solutions. The School’s flagship MPH Program attracts students from a wide range of disciplines from throughout the region.

LRFIPUR is a recently established university-level research institute at the NUS. Supported by a generous gift from the Lloyd's Register Foundation, LRFIPUR is the first international academic and public outreach institution of its kind in Asia. LRFIPUR undertakes research on the scientific understanding of risk and its practical application through a multi-disciplinary approach that brings together science, health and medical sciences, engineering, social sciences, and humanities.

SSHSPH and LRFIPUR invite applications for a full-time research fellow position. The researcher will work with the Deputy Director and Lead Scientist LRFIPUR (Health and Lifestyle) to develop and deliver cutting-edge research in the field of risk communication related to health and lifestyle decisions. The successful candidate will be involved in raising funding for future research with the support of the SSHSPH/LRFIPUR teams.

Job scope:

• To work with the SSHSPH and LRFIPUR teams on collaborative and international research and practice projects with partner organisations nationally and globally (including NGO, industry, and other research and academic institutions).
• Undertake specific research project/s under the guidance of LRFIPUR Lead Scientist and contribute to development of research activities.
• Design and conduct quantitative, qualitative and behavioural research; analyse, interpret, and compile data for both presentations and scholarly outputs.
• Prepare and coordinate research ethics protocols.
• Contribute to preparation and writing of research manuscripts and conference abstracts/posters.
• Collaborate with of LRFIPUR Lead Scientist to develop and submit new research grant applications.
• Support the dissemination of research outcomes through appropriate channels and outlets including policy briefs.
• Assist with the supervision of research students, interns and research assistants where required.
• Perform other duties or roles as may be reasonably required

Qualifications

Qualifications:

PhD Degree in a relevant subject area including Public Health, Psychology, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Health Services Research, Health Information, Global Health, Medicine, Health/Clinical Sciences, or equivalent.

Requirements:

• Excellent writing and communication skills in English.
• Demonstrated experience in conducting human subject research.
• Experience in quantitative and/or qualitative research and data analysis; working knowledge of one or more of the following software: R, SPSS, Stata, SAS.
• Experience in publishing in peer-reviewed international journals.
• Highly organized and able to work effectively under pressure, use independent judgement and produce a quality work product within tight time constraints
• Able to work independently as well as with a team.

The following requirements will be considered as an advantage:

• Research experience/background in one of the following is highly regarded:
  • Population mental health
  • Clinical/medical decision making
  • Health behaviors and/or promotion
• Experience of policy writing
• Field experience in Asia
