Research Fellow (Biofilm Characterization by AFM), Faculty of Dentistry

Job Description

The Faculty of Dentistry at the National University of Singapore invites applications for the position of Research Associate or Research Fellow to develop a fully funded project on the characterisation of physico-mechanical properties of laboratory and clinically grown biofilms. 

The duties will include:

  • Design and perform experiments for the quantification of biofilms properties using atomic force microscope (main focus) and other characterisations to be performed using rheometer, confocal microscopy and microfluidic devices (secondary focus)
  • Collect, analyse and interpret experimental results
  • Draft reports and research papers
  • Maintain housekeeping of the laboratory area and general maintenance tasks ensuring laboratory safety
  • Perform other related duties to support the research group

Qualifications

  • Master's or PhD in Materials Science, Dental Biomaterials, Biomedical Engineering, Microbiology or related science areas.
  • Previous experience in characterisation of physico-mechanical properties of microbial cells and biofilms with atomic force microscope (mandatory).
  • Experience in rheology, confocal microscopy and measurement of adhesion forces of biofilms on substrates is highly advantageous.
  • Experience in molecular techniques, qPCR, Western blots, colorimetric assays and standard microbial quantification is an advantage. 
  • Demonstrable experience writing scientific/technical reports and original research papers is an advantage.

The selected candidate will be offered a competitive salary and benefits with an appointment of up to 24 months.
