Job Description

In response to this threat to the future of medicine, we aim to develop novel antibiotics using the conjugated oligoelectrolyte (COE) antibiotics. COEs are defined by a linear hydrophobic conjugated backbone with polar ionic pendants at both terminals. The modular design of COEs allows for rapid tuning of molecular fragments to access a large continuum of properties. They were firstly synthesized in Prof. Bazan’s group as two-photo absorption chromophores and later found to have biological applications as antimicrobial agents.

This project aims to characterize the antibacterial activity of COEs against a panel of bacteria. Routine assays will be performed on the COEs, including minimal inhibitory concentration (MICs), minimal bactericidal concentration (MBCs), time-kill kinetics, and synergistic studies with commercial antibiotics. The cytotoxicity of COEs against mammalian cells will be routinely examined. The characterization and applications for these COE-treated biological samples will also be investigated via different fluorescence-based techniques such as confocal microscopy and flow cytometry.

Training will be provided for the assays and techniques required for this project. The project will be mentored and discussed by postdoc research fellow and principal investigator on a routinely basis.


  • The candidate must have a Bachelor Degree with Honours or its equivalent 
  • Independent and motivated individual with good problem-solving skills 
  • With practical experience and/or knowledge of: 
    • Microbiology, cell biology, or biochemistry
    • Characterization techniques including absorbance/fluorescence measurements, flow cytometry or fluorescent microscopy
    • Microsoft office
    • Understanding of aseptic techniques in laboratory and experience in a biosafety level 2 lab is a plus
