The Department of Computer Science at the University of Surrey invites applications for the post of Associate Professor or Senior Lecturer in Digital Resilience. The post includes teaching and research.

The Department of Computer Science within the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences has an international reputation for research and teaching.  We are developing an exciting new activity in Digital Resilience, with the recruitment of several posts, to complement and extend the department’s existing research in Nature Inspired Computing and Engineering (NICE), Distributed and Networked Systems, and Secure Systems.  Surrey hosts UK Academic Centres of Excellence both in Research and in Education, with both recognised by GCHQ.

The Department of Computer Science is looking to establish a new research group in Digital Resilience, through the recruitment to four new posts initially, to support the national agenda in how as a nation we can respond to, or recover readily from, a shock or disruptive process to our digital infrastructure. The Digital Resilience strategy is an opportunity to broaden the department’s work to consider new aspects of the growing dependence on, and protection of, networked digital system systems, to include research in technologies and architectures for digital resilience, cyber resilience, learning for disruption resistance and recovery, risk modelling and analysis, online crime and fraud, misinformation and disinformation, forensics, and other related fields.

Candidates to the post should have;

  • A PhD in a relevant subject or equivalent professional experience.
  • Evidence of securing research funding, production of high quality outputs and management of research projects and supervise research students is also required.
  • It is expected that the post-holder will also contribute to high quality teaching in fundamental and applied topics in computer science at undergraduate and post-graduate level and to supervise projects and dissertations.
  • This is a full-time and permanent position. We would expect the appointed candidate to start as soon as they are available.

The University and the Department specifically are committed to building a culturally diverse organisation and strongly encourages applications from female and minority candidates. The Department of Computer Science was awarded a Bronze Athena SWAN award, in recognition of our commitment to equality and diversity.

The University of Surrey is committed to providing an inclusive environment that offers equal opportunities for all. We place great value on diversity and are seeking to increase the diversity within our community. Therefore, we particularly encourage applications from under-represented groups, such as people from Black, Asian and minority ethnic groups and people with disabilities.

We offer a generous pension, relocation assistance where appropriate, flexible working options including job share and blended home/campus working locations (dependent on work duties), access to world-class leisure facilities on campus, a range of travel schemes and supportive family friendly benefits including an excellent on-site nursery.

For further details and an informal discussion please contact the Head of Department, Prof Steve Schneider (s.schneider@surrey.ac.uk)

The qualifications required and job specification is detailed in the job profile.

As part of their application, candidates are expected to submit:

  • a cover letter,
  • a CV,
  • a concept paper explaining own plans for research (up to 2 pages)
  • two names for references.

Closing deadline for applications is 23:59 Sunday the 2nd October 2022

Interviews are planned for W/C 24th October 2022.
