The Area:

The Advanced Instrumentation and Technology Centre (AITC) is a national facility in Canberra, Australia. It was established to support the development of the next generation of instruments for astronomy and space. The AITC provides cutting-edge, extensive capabilities in the development of high performance instrumentation for ground-based telescopes and space missions, including precision manufacturing, rapid prototyping and the test and evaluation of small spacecrafts.

The AITC is currently involved in the design and construction of large ground-based instruments for the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT), the European Southern Observatory (ESO), the Subaru Telescope, and other ground-based observatories, in Australia and internationally. The AITC leads cutting-edge space technology programs in laser communications, earth observations and hosts the Australian National Space Test Facility.

The AITC is hosted by the Australian National University, Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the Mount Stromlo Observatory.

The Positions:

The Advanced Instrumentation and Technology Centre is seeking to offer multiple positions at various professional and academic levels. The level of appointment will be determined by a candidate’s experience, skills and expertise. The successful candidate will contribute to the design, construction, testing, and/or deployment of instruments for astronomy and space, joining a team of ~40 multi-disciplinary researchers and engineers.

• Opportunities to collaborate closely and, when appropriate, undertake work at other Astralis instrumentation consortium nodes at Macquarie University (Astralis-AAO) and Sydney University (Astralis-USyd).
• Opportunities to engage into close collaborations/partnerships with a broad range of national and international astronomical observatories, space agencies and industry collaborators, partners and stakeholders.

Postdoctoral Fellow – Academic Level A / Research Fellow – Academic Level B / Instrument Scientist – Academic Level C

The Postdoctoral Fellow / Research Fellow / Instrument Scientist will contribute to the strategic goals of the Advanced Instrumentation and Technology Centre (AITC).

To excel in this role, you will have a Masters degree or PhD or progress towards a PhD or equivalent in physics, engineering or related area with work experience in a research field related to astronomical and/or space instrumentation and/or laser communications. Demonstrated experience in instrumentation development, with high-level expertise in two or more of the following areas: visible and/or infra-red optical instrumentation, adaptive optics, detector technology, programming (e.g. Python), high performance computing, laser communications.

Project Manager Discipline Lead – Senior Manager 1 (Specialist)

The Project Manager Discipline Lead is responsible for leading and mentoring project managers, ensuring AITC projects have the necessary standards, resources, expertise and facilities required to fulfil AITC commitments and targets.

To excel in this role you will have an undergraduate degree and progress towards postgraduate qualifications in project management, plus over four years relevant experience in: senior management in engineering environments; complex multidisciplinary projects using waterfall and/or agile techniques; liaising with teams, stakeholders, negotiation and project management development; analytical, conceptual, problem solving and report writing

Mechanical / Senior Mechanical Specialist – ANU Officer Level 6/7, 8 (Specialist)

The Mechanical / Senior Mechanical Specialist is expected to provide specialist technical expertise in support of design, development, validation and maintenance for approve RSAA technical projects and activities.

To excel in this role you will have a degree in science, engineering or related discipline and a minimum of two years relevant experience in: mechanical and opto-mechanical design; system validation techniques and maintenance; computer assisted design and modelling, including integration of optical, thermal, and mechanical (including FEA) design approaches and proficiency with solid modelling and the ASME Y14.5 Standard or equivalent.

Instrumentation / Senior Instrumentation Specialist – ANU Officer Level 6/7, 8 (Specialist)

The Instrumentation / Senior Instrumentation Specialist is expected to provide technical expertise in support of the RSAA astronomical instrumentation program in the area of electronics, and/or optical detector systems.

To excel in this role you will have a degree in science, engineering or related discipline and relevant experience in: a multi-disciplinary technical environment and two or more of the following technical areas: advanced embedded electronics, controls and/or  detector systems.

Systems Specialist / Senior System Specialist – ANU Officer Level 6/7, 8 (Specialist)

The System Specialist / Senior System Specialist will work with Project Manager and project teams and will be responsible for oversight of the requirements definition, design synthesis and system validation during the full life-cycle of the project.

To excel in this role you will have a degree in science, engineering or an equivalent combination of relevant experience in: instrument or aerospace systems design including; requirements development, prototyping, build/manufacture and system validation. Experience with Model Based Systems Engineering processes and software (such as MagicDraw) would be highly regarded.

The Optical / Senior Optical Specialist will undertake research and development activities providing specialist technical support to AITC program in the area of optics, including ensuring optics standards and technical capabilities requirements are met for assigned projects.

To excel in this role you will have a degree in optics or related discipline and will demonstrate experience in: management of optical systems design, manufacturing, integration, testing and delivery, and optical design software as well as optical materials, properties and coatings.

The Software Specialist / Senior Software Specialist will support the design, validation and maintenance of software systems for approved RSAA technical programs and activities.

To excel in this role you will have a relevant degree (e.g. computer science, software engineering, physics, mathematics) and experience in: design, production, and testing of software systems in a scientific environment; and modern software development methodologies including languages such as C++ and Python
