Job Description

  • Ability to develop database to compile vast amounts of information from activities such as gene expression profiling and protein expression is an added advantage.
  • Able to create and perform modelling to analyse biological data, develop dynamic simulations, and pattern analyses of biological systems.
  • Experience in the creation of data algorithms and specialised computer software to identify and classify components of a biological system, such as DNA sequences.
  • Responsible for the development of systems for collection and organisation of data.
  • Able to present the analysed data sets to scientist, researchers and clinicians.

Duties

  • Perform analysis on next generation sequencing data including genetic variant calling, gene expression and others.
  • Compile data for use in activities such as gene expression profiling, genome annotation, and structural bioinformatics.
  • Analyse large molecular datasets such as raw microarray data and genomic sequence data for clinical or basic research purposes.
  • Manipulate publicly accessible, commercial, or proprietary genomic or post-genomic databases.
  • Prepare summary statistics of information regarding human genomes.
  • Create novel computational approaches and analytical tools as required by research goals.
  • Research genetic characteristics or expression
  • Analyse biological samples.
  • Develop software or applications for scientific or technical use.

Duties

  • Consult with researchers to analyse problems, recommend technology-based solutions, or determine computational strategies.
  • Communicate research results through conference presentations, scientific publications, or project reports.
  • Direct the work of technicians and information technology staff applying bioinformatics tools or applications in areas such as genomics, transcriptomics, and clinical bioinformatics.
  • Provide statistical and computational tools for biologically based activities such as genetic analysis, measurement of gene expression, and gene function determination Improve user interfaces to bioinformatics software and databases.
  • Develop software or applications for scientific or technical use. Advise others on the development or use of new technologies.
  • Prepare scientific or technical reports or presentations
  • Supervise scientific or technical personnel. Instruct and train others in the selection and use of bioinformatics tools.
  • Create or modify web-based bioinformatics tools.

Qualifications

  • PhD in the field of bioinformatics, biostatistics or computational biology
  • Post-doctoral training minimum of three years
  • Background experience within different biomedical science and health fields, including biology, genetics or pharmaceuticals
  • Perform analysis on next generation sequencing data including genetic variant calling, gene expression and others (added advantage)

Skills required:

  • Good command of English, spoken and written
  • Strong publication track record
  • Experience in the analysis of short or long-reads sequencing data
  • Proficiency in Python, R, C++ or similar languages
  • Able to work independently
  • Able to meet tasked milestones and deadlines
