Key Position Responsibilities

The Associate Professor of Palliative Care and Aged Care Nursing will play a key role in setting the strategic goals of the collaborative in consultation with the University, Research Centre for Palliative Care, Death, and Dying, Caring Futures Institute and Northern Adelaide Local Health Network (NALHN), in order to develop and expand the research program and reputation of both Flinders University and NALHN at an international level. It is expected that the position will work effectively with staff from a range of disciplines.

The Associate Professor of Palliative Care and Aged Care Nursing will lead and undertake strategic research aligned to the Research Centre for Palliative Care, Death, and Dying, Caring Futures Institute, and the NALHN.

The position will provide strategic leadership and vision through the development of a collaborative of academic excellence to build research capacity and capability and increase research performance within the Caring Futures Institute and NALHN, and support joint research endeavours that respond to the research needs and priorities of the University and NALHN. It is expected that such endeavours will promote excellence in care, research, teaching and policy.

The position will be responsible for engaging with industry, government, and other external organisations, strengthening research collaborations internally and externally and supporting recruitment of international and domestic higher degree research students and research fellowships. In addition, the position will be required to provide leadership and direction to staff of both organisations and Flinders University students in relation to research plans, the development of successful track records in strategic areas of research and the provision of feedback on individual grant applications and publications.

It is a requirement of this position to support the aims and objectives of NALHN through understanding and implementation of the NALHN Strategic Plan and Objectives, be aware of and adhere to NALHN’s policies and procedures, and demonstrate a commitment to NALHN values.

The Associate Professor in Palliative Care and Aged Care Nursing is responsible for:

  • Fostering research excellence by undertaking research and research leadership in the Research Centre for Palliative Care, Death, and Dying, Caring Futures Institute and NALHN, in alignment with Flinders Research Integrity Framework and NALHN Research Governance Framework.
  • Providing research expertise and leadership, and make an outstanding and distinguished contribution to ethical, high quality and innovative research through activities such as high-quality publications, external grant acquisitions and successful higher degree completions consistent with the College of Nursing and Health Sciences research performance expectation, mentoring and developing early and mid-career researchers and NALHN staff, recruitment and supervision of Research Higher Degree Students and delivery of high quality presentations at the local, national and international level.
  • Leading research that makes meaningful impact and drive translation of evidence into practice.
  • Devising and implementing strategies that will strengthen and advance the nexus between teaching, research and clinical care
  • Undertaking guest lecturing and seminars in areas of expertise to inspire and encourage students and colleagues to engage in further study and/or undertake research.
  • Leading and developing strategic planning and professional activities relevant to promoting research and identifying opportunities to expand and grow research opportunities and development of research policy.
  • Providing leadership and expertise to foster strategic local, national and international relationships, collaboration and networks with a range of stakeholders including industry, government and other external organisations, with a focus on palliative care and aged care research.
  • Contributing to leadership initiatives of the Caring Futures Institute and NALHN.
  • Some out of hours work (including weekends) as well as rural SA, interstate and overseas travel, may be required.
  • Any other responsibilities in line with the level of the position as assigned by the Supervisor and/or the University.

Key Position Capabilities

  • Completion of a PhD or equivalent in nursing, palliative care and aged care, or a health-related discipline.
  • Registration as a registered nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
  • An established international reputation of outstanding high-quality innovative and independent research and research impact in cancer survivorship and supportive cancer care aligned with the College’s research strengths evidenced by sustained high quality publications as corresponding author and attraction of several competitive external grants.
  • Evidence of a substantial and sustained research impact and proven ability to undertake an active leadership role in research activities e.g. citations and industry engagement.
  • Demonstrated excellence in the supervision of honours and research higher degree students to successful completion.
  • Significant experience in a senior academic or research leadership position with relevant Research Project management experience relevant to the research environment, including leadership of a large team.
  • A demonstrated strong track record of establishing effective research collaborations with external national and international partners.
  • A significant international research reputation in palliative care and ageing research evidenced by sustained high quality publications with evidenced senior authorship contribution.
  • High level of understanding of intellectual property and the commercialisation process in relation to a research environment.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, including the demonstrated ability to establish and make effective contributions to leadership within the College, students and industry nationally and/or internationally.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor less experienced University and/or NALHN Staff.
  • Evidence of upholding the values and ethos of the University and the NALHN
