Look to the future in a world-renowned centre for education, research and enterprise.

Do you have experience in researching sustainable urban freight solutions? Have you been involved in practical trials of such solutions in real-world settings? Do you have a passion for driving the take-up of such approaches by the freight sector to help meet zero emission freight strategies?

Then the Department of Civil, Maritime and Environmental Engineering is the ideal place to make your mark. We have brand new, world-class facilities, a vibrant research culture, and are committed to all our staff and students achieving their best.

You will join our department in one of the strongest and largest Schools of Engineering within the UK and will be working on the Future Transport Zone (FTZ) project, Theme 2 - ‘Logistics’. The FTZ is a £28.75m programme awarded by the Department for Transport (DfT) to Solent Transport and includes a range of innovative test and trial projects to be delivered across the Solent area. The projects within the programme are grouped into two key themes: Theme 1 (focused around personal mobility (Mobility as a Service, Growing Solent Go, Bike Share, Dynamic Demand Responsive Transit (DDRT) trials, Lift sharing incentive project, Mobility Credits trial and E-Scooter trial projects) and Theme 2 (Sustainable Urban Logistics projects (Micro Consolidation, Macro Consolidation and Drone Logistics projects)).

Your work will focus around the planned trials of micro and macro solutions in the Solent region, working with the project partners and industry collaborators. Within this environment we will support you to further develop your research career while you play a pivotal role in enhancing our research strength.

We are looking for individuals who:

  • Want to apply quantitative and qualitative methods to help better understand business-as-usual freight performance
  • Design and evaluate innovative and sustainable logistics systems
  • Want to work in a collaborative team environment
  • Have excellent inter-personal skills and enjoy engaging with industry

To make the most of this exciting role, you will have a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in Logistics, Transport Management or Operational research along with a first degree in engineering.

As a university with an Athena SWAN silver award, we are recognised for our commitment to improving equality for all in science and engineering.  Our comprehensive benefits package also includes a contributory pension scheme, generous holiday allowance, subsidised health and fitness facilities, a cycle-to-work scheme and a range of discounts.

Your application will be treated in the strictest confidence. For informal inquiries about this post or other opportunities, please contact the Head of the Transportation Research Group, Professor Tom Cherrett (T.J.Cherrett@soton.ac.uk).
