Associate Professor/Lecturer in Biomedical imaging and image based modelling

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Southampton invites applications for an Associate Professor/Lecturer in Biomedical imaging and image based modelling with an emphasis on advanced X-ray Computer Tomography (XCT) systems and applications.  The successful candidate will play an integral role in developing and leading activities within the µ-VIS facility and contribute strongly to our research in Bioengineering Sciences

 We welcome applications from candidates with expertise in any combination of these areas: 

  • Use of image based techniques for a wide range of biological and medical applications
  • Musculoskeletal biomechanics, biological transport systems, computational modelling 
  • Advanced image processing (e.g. reconstruction, correlated imaging, automated feature extraction)
  • Micro-focus XCT system development

You will join a very active department with inter-disciplinary research interests across the University, with strong links to the medical school, health sciences, life sciences, oceanography, archaeology, palaeontology, where fundamental and applied problems are addressed with theoretical, experimental and computational methods. 

The µ-VIS Centre (see www.muvis.org and brochures) has two of the largest high-energy micro-focus XCT systems in the UK, two uniquely designed devices for medical soft tissue histology (see xrayhistology), and innovative in vivo fluorescence + XCT (www.dotmed.com/news/story/51161/) as part of partnership between Engineering, Medicine and the NHS/University Biomedical Imaging Unit (BIU). µ-VIS is one of the 4 designated UK University Centres forming a new £10M National Research Facility (NRF) for XCT (nxct.org.uk).   

You will be based in the Bioengineering Sciences Group, which undertakes a wide range of activities applying engineering principles to the fields of biology and health care: https://www.southampton.ac.uk/engineering/research/groups/bioeng.page

You will have an academic reputation, demonstrated by high-quality journal publications in your field, you will be committed to developing, largely through external funding, a research team in your area. In education, you will develop and deliver a range of innovative teaching and assessment approaches in different areas of Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering continually enhancing the student experience.   It is essential you have a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in X-ray imaging, biological imaging, engineering, physical sciences, or related subjects.
