Department of Geography, National University of Singapore (NUS)
Faculty Position in Social/Cultural Geographies
Associate or Full Professor (with tenure) specialising in Urban Geography

The Department of Geography at the National University of Singapore (NUS) seeks to appoint an established research leader in the field of Urban Geography. The successful candidate will be expected to play a central role in the Department’s Social and Cultural Geographies (SCG) group and to build an ambitious programme of research at NUS.

We particularly welcome applications from urban social/cultural geographers working on issues of social/spatial justice or the cultural politics of urban (re)development. For candidates who do not have previous experience of researching in/on Asia, it is important to demonstrate evidence of an ability and willingness to develop research projects in/from the region.

The NUS Department of Geography has a long and rich tradition of social and cultural geography research, often engaging transdisciplinary urban studies. Well-established strengths include scholarship on cultural/heritage landscapes, migration and transnationalism, gender, and geographies of tourism. In more recent years the SCG research group has developed other research strands including ageing and care, children and young people, pedagogy innovations, urban liveability and transportation. The group is currently organised around two inclusive and overlapping themes: mobilities and urban life.

Qualifications

SCG members have strong collaborative relations with colleagues in the other two research groups in the Department (Politics, Economies And Space, PEAS, and Tropical Environmental Change, TEC) and scholars in cognate disciplines, particularly as part of the NUS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and the recently-established College of Humanities and Sciences. NUS more widely is among the world’s most highly reputed universities and provides a generous and well-resourced environment in terms of funding and other research support. For more information on the NUS Department of Geography, please see: https://fass.nus.edu.sg/geog/.

In terms of scope and responsibilities of the position, the successful candidate will be expected to:

  1. Play a leading role in the Department’s theoretical and empirical research activities;
  2. Teach a minimum of two modules per academic year at the undergraduate and/or graduate level, and advise graduate students;
  3. Perform administrative/service duties commensurate with a tenured appointment.

Interested candidates must have a PhD in geography or an allied field. They should submit an application comprising: (i) a letter of interest with details of their research credentials and future plans, including specification of the level of post they are applying for (professor or associate professor); and (ii) a full curriculum vitae (including teaching experience).

An internationally competitive remuneration package, including a period of subsidised housing, medical benefits and relocation expenses (where applicable), will be offered to the successful candidate. NUS also provides start-up grants, the value of which is commensurate with experience and position of appointment.

For further enquiries, please contact the Chair of the Search Committee, Professor Tim Bunnell: geotgb@nus.edu.sg

Evaluation of applications will commence on 31 May 2022 and will continue until a suitable candidate is found. Shortlisted candidates will be notified soon thereafter, and plans will then be made for a campus visit and interview (either virtual or in-person, depending on COVID-19 travel restrictions).
