Applications are invited for a Temporary post of a UCD Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 within UCD School of Geography

The WaterFutures project is an EPA funded, multidisciplinary, research project which started in April 2021. The project, which has Irish and one international partner, is gathering information on the effects of climate change and demographic/social change of numerical modelling tools used in managing water quality in Ireland and will develop, adapt and incorporated appropriate useful models into systems being used by the EPA in responding to the requirements of the Water Framework Directive.

This post-doctoral researcher will have a key role in the completion of work-package 7 as detailed below. This post is focused on improving how modelling tools are used to inform catchment management and policy, in relation to the eco-hydromorphological implications of climate and land-use change scenarios in Ireland. This will include the integration and novel geospatial analyses of existing datasets and integration emerging knowledge in this area.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with a range of key stakeholders and related research projects. Specifically, the focus of this position will be to:

(i) collate established data on hydromorphology in Ireland and explore its relationship to emerging hydromorphological metrics (e.g. MQI for Ireland) and existing ecology metrics (e.g. Q-values).

(ii) adapt and develop risk maps for sediment yields in Ireland, using extant datasets and models.

(iii) develop approaches to assess future hydromorphological pressures in Irish catchments, under different environmental change scenarios for Ireland.

(iv) assess the vulnerability and resilience of Irish aquatic ecology to environmental change, and develop models for Irish ecology under future environmental change scenarios.

(v) liaise with the EPA catchment unit in implementing the above outputs into their systems. To facilitate this activity the position will be partly based in EPA offices.

(vi) assist with scientific reviews of relevant literature, project management, report writing and production of scientific journal articles and project publicity material.

In addition, the candidate will feed into the management of this important project, especially in relation to the deliverables of the work-package on hydromorphology and ecology.

This is an academic research role, where you will conduct a specified programme of research supported by research training and development under the supervision and direction of a Principal Investigator. The primary purpose of the role is to further develop your research skills and competences, including the processes of publication in peer-reviewed academic publications, the development of funding proposals, the mentorship of graduate students along with the opportunity to develop your skills in research led teaching.

Salary: €39,522 - €40,083 per annum

Appointment on the above range will be dependent on qualifications and experience

Closing date: 17:00hrs (local Irish time) on 16th September 2022
