Applications are invited for appointment as Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering (Ref.: 516181), to commence as soon as possible and no later than July 1, 2023, on a three-year fixed-term basis with contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers B.Eng., M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D. degree programs. The University of Hong Kong has a highly ranked engineering school and an active Mechanical Engineering Program. The Department employs about 30 full-time faculty members and has well-equipped teaching and research facilities and support. Information about the Department can be obtained at

Applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree in mechanical engineering or a related engineering field. Previous teaching experience will be a plus. Prior academic or industrial R&D track records in biotechnologies, instrumentation, devices and microfluidics as well as commercialization experience will be advantageous. They should also have excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills, and an excellent command of English.

The appointee is expected to teach undergraduate courses in Mechanical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering, primarily in fluid dynamics, transport phenomena and hands-on projects, and may be required to teach other introductory subjects in a standard undergraduate curriculum as well. Courses will be conducted in the setting of big classroom lectures as well as small group tutorials. Strongly motivated candidates who are willing to engage in innovative teaching schemes like flipped classroom and e-Learning will be preferred. The appointee is also expected to supervise research postgraduate students, capstone projects with engineering contents for final year undergraduates and taught master degree students. Administrative works which promote the educational mission of the University will also be required.

A highly competitive remuneration package commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income.
