Birmingham City University is a large and diverse place to work right in the heart of the city and we currently have an exciting opportunity for a Research and Innovation Development and Support Officer to join our dynamic team. The role will suit an experienced officer who can demonstrate significant knowledge and skill supporting projects throughout their lifecycle from application to award and beyond.

Our Research and Innovation Gateway team seeks and develops new opportunities for collaborative research and innovation activities with other universities and partners in key sectors. Our aim is to pursue high quality and impactful research and to enhance BCUs reputation for research regionally, nationally, and globally. Within innovation, we aim to create a community of interest across academia, public and private sectors, as well as other communities, to influence the innovation debate, space, and practice. There are two roles - envisaged to be primarily supporting researchers in the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Built Environment and the Faculty of Health, Education and Life Sciences. 

The Research & Innovation Gateway (RIG) team is one of a number of key operational teams that constitute the Research, Innovation and Enterprise professional services department. The function of the RIG is to provide cross-University support for the development and delivery of externally funded research and innovation projects, working in partnership with Faculty-based Associate Deans, research leaders, and research-active staff.

A Research and Innovation Support Officer (RISO) provides comprehensive support for externally funded research and innovation projects, contributing to the strategic objectives of BCU and specific faculty objectives. This will be throughout a project lifecycle (from pre-award to post-award and project closure) to support the development and management of BCU’s portfolio of projects. The role entails working with a range of stakeholders within the University and with external project partners and funders. One role will focus on pre-award and on supporting the academic team in securing additional funding to meet wider faculty objectives and the other role will focus on supporting post-award to enable delivery of excellence in projects and meet all internal and external requirements.

A more detailed overview is found in the job description. Some of the key primary responsibilities are as follows:

Pre-award - The RIDSO will:

  • Register with applicable tender portals (such as Research CONNECT).
  • Develop understanding of funders and their various themes/funding portfolios to understand their core objectives reflecting these to academics and develop relationships with the wider team to understand key areas of interest for future proposals.
  • Use BCU’s system to create and develop projects.
  • Develop understanding of the invitation to tenders where required. 
  • Support the bidding and funding process and obtain final approvals for submitting.

Post-award - The RIDSO will:

  • Conduct and prepare reports and documentation before and after project reviews as required depending on risk / value) supporting addressing any issues raised.
  • Respond to and provide support for internal and external audits, where required.
  • Act as an intermediary to provide support for the PM and link to faculty and RIE, such as with finance and procurement liaison.

Essential:

  • A degree (or demonstrate skills, qualifications and experience at an equivalent level). 
  • Demonstrable experience of supporting bid development
  • Experience in the area of Social Sciences
  • A project management qualification and/or experience of providing project support.
  • Experience of running financial or project management monitoring systems 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills 
  • IT skills including familiarity with Microsoft Office, Project Management software and SharePoint.

You should also be able to demonstrate:

  • An attention to detail with a well organised self-managing workstyle. 
  • Pragmatic approach to problem solving using own initiative 
  • Ability to identify, assess and understand potential risk to project delivery and propose solutions.
