Job Details

  • Exciting opportunity to join Australia’s premier University and provide strategic leadership in Researcher Training
  • Located on the University’s Camperdown Campus

The University of Sydney is Australia’s first University and one of the world’s leading comprehensive research and teaching universities – ranked 41st in the world overall (QS 2023) and among the best for impact (global 52nd, THE 2022).

Since our inception over 170 years ago, the University has been a leader in improving the world around us, and this drive for innovation and impact continues to be a hallmark of the University’s vision for the future. An exciting new chapter is also beginning for our institution as we enter a new strategic cycle (to 2032) and following leadership renewal and consolidation in the last year, with the appointments of Professor Mark Scott AO as Vice-Chancellor and Principal, and of a new Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor, a Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), a Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) and a Vice-President (External Engagement).

The Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Researcher Training) is a newly established senior leadership position in the Research Portfolio and is responsible for the Researcher Development Unit. The appointee will also engage with relevant colleagues across the University to explore opportunities to establish a Graduate School or similar body bringing together higher degree research students and supervisors. The role reports to and provides strategic advice to our new Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), Professor Emma Johnston AO, particularly in relation to early career researchers’ development and performance. The appointee will have a unique opportunity to oversee initiatives to ensure the highest-quality research training and services and staff and that we further strengthen our capacity to attract outstanding and diverse higher degree research students from Australia and around the world.

We are seeking an outstanding academic senior leader with experience of implementing research strategies and policies in a large academic unit. The appointee will also be familiar with trends in the sector that impact researcher training and demonstrate a genuine passion for ensuring high-quality researcher training, support, and development, contributing to a diverse and inclusive research workforce. A mature communicator and senior leader, they will be able to engage effectively with colleagues across the Research and Education portfolios, Faculties, Schools, Research Centres, and relevant domestic and international Graduate Studies networks.

Term and remuneration

The successful candidate will be offered an initial five-year, fixed-term position, with the option – subject to further discussion with the DVC (Research) and the relevant disciplinary area – for the appointee to devote a portion of their time to their own research. This will be subject to completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees. The successful candidate will be offered an attractive remuneration package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and the candidate’s relevant experience and qualifications.

Visa sponsorship and relocation assistance will also be provided if required.
