Applications are invited from graduates with a good first degree and subsequent PhD in Psychology or another related discipline for a four-year appointment. The appointee will co-ordinate and oversee research conducted at the University of Surrey as part of the Cerebra Network for Neurodevelopmental Disorders, funded by Cerebra.

The Cerebra Network for Neurodevelopmental Disorders (www.cerebranetwork.com) aims to identify and reduce the contribution of mental health difficulties, poor sleep, autism characteristics and pain and discomfort to negative outcomes in children with complex needs due to intellectual disability associated with rare genetic syndromes and/or autism. This ambitious programme of research  is led from four research sites, University of Surrey (Dr Jo Moss), University of Birmingham (Dr Caroline Richards), Aston University (Dr Jane Waite) and University of Warwick (Dr Hayley Crawford).

You will co-ordinate a programme of research which focuses specifically on complex patterns of autism in children with genetic syndromes.

This research aims to:

  1. i: identify the predictive factors that contribute to the complex pattern of heterogeneity of autism characteristics evident in this population.
  2. ii: consider how these complexities impact on the utility of existing autism diagnostic assessments for use in this population.
  3. iii: evaluate the social-cognitive mechanisms that underly the development of atypical presentations of autism in individuals with genetic syndromes.

The successful candidate will oversee a programme of research at the Neurodevelopmental research (NDevR) lab based at the University of Surrey: www.ndevresearchlab.com  led by Dr Jo Moss. You will be part of a strong network of expert researchers in the field of behavioural phenotypes and neurodevelopmental disorders. You will work collaboratively with researchers and clinicians in the field to integrate research data regarding use of diagnostic tools within this population. You will communicate with families and stakeholders to ensure effective dissemination of the work, as well as traditional scientific communication via academic papers (at least one first author paper is envisaged) and conferences. You will use a range of research methods including informant questionnaire surveys, behavioural observation and eye-tracking methods. You will support recruitment of participants via existing research databases and via syndrome support groups. You will contribute to the wider Network of research, working closely with a PhD student at the University of Surrey and co-ordinating research activities with PhD students and post-doctoral researchers across the Network.

You will have a PhD or equivalent qualification in Psychology or a related subject (or will be close to finishing your PhD), have extensive practical experience of applying the relevant skills and techniques of research with children with intellectual disability and their families and related professionals. You will have experience in conducting eye-tracking and behavioural studies and standard data coding as well as having experience of statistical analysis using statistical packages such as R or SPSS.

The post-holder will be based in the School of Psychology at the University of Surrey. The School of Psychology has a long-standing reputation for its vibrant and supportive research and teaching environment. This role is part-time (0.6FTE) and on a fixed term contract for a period of 24 months with a possible start of 1st September 2022.

In addition to your salary, you will receive pension contributions via the Universities Superannuation Scheme, a generous annual leave entitlement, an attractive research environment, and access to a variety of staff development opportunities.

You are welcome to contact Dr Jo Moss the recruiting Manager (j.moss@surrey.ac.uk) if you would like further information or to discuss the post.
