Job description
We are currently looking for a skilled, focused and driven technician to join our technical team within the School of Applied Sciences. You will become a valued member of the team, supporting our specialist teaching areas in Sports, Exercise and Health Sciences. You will be joining a highly motivated team, committed to the highest quality of teaching and learning, informed by excellent research and knowledge exchange.

The role
As a technician in the School of Applied Sciences, you will work closely with the technical team in order to provide a comprehensive technical support service to students and staff in the Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences section of the School. You will assist the senior technician to ensure that the maintenance, organisation and development of the facilities and equipment reflects departmental needs in order to provide excellent teaching and research support to students and staff.
A key part of your role will be to demonstrate and train students and other users in the use of equipment and techniques relating to exercise physiology, biomechanics, activity and health and human performance, as part of the taught provision or in support of research and consultancy projects. Other tasks include the preparation, associated set up and clear up of materials and equipment for practical classes, ensuring adherence to protocols and health & safety regulations; the maintenance, calibration, cleaning and adjustment of laboratory equipment; maintaining up-to-date database records of consumables and equipment for audit purposes; assisting with ordering of consumables and equipment and liaising with external sales companies for procurement purposes.
Who we are looking for.
The ideal candidate will have:
- An honours degree in a sport science related subject or equivalent professional experience in sport, exercise and health sciences.
- Practical experience of working in a sport science or exercise and health-related laboratory.
- Practical knowledge and experience of specialist laboratory equipment and procedures within sport, exercise & health science.
- The ability to organise and provide training on equipment for students and staff to enable safe, independent working.
- Knowledge of safety procedures, including COSHH, risk assessments and the safe disposal of hazardous waste and chemicals.
- Good organisational skills with ability to undertake own workload within a structured timetable.
- Well-developed IT skills, including experience of using databases.
- An ability to work independently and as a collaborative team member.
- A flexible approach to managing demands and workload.
- Ability to liaise with academics and external companies, alongside the ability to relate successfully to colleagues and students.
