About the opportunity

The Staff Veterinarian - Rotating Internship position works within the Sydney School of Veterinary Science, which provides a range of undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs in veterinary and associated disciplines. The role will operate within the School's teaching hospital in Camperdown. The teaching hospital provides clinical learning experience for veterinary students and staff engaged in professional training programs as well as being a commercial centre and providing a range of veterinary services to the public.

The rotating internship is designed to further develop your skills in a range of disciplines, with a goal of preparing you for a future residency. From our last five cohorts, close to 50% have been placed in residencies, 15% in specialty internships and 10% in higher research programs. If successful, you will spend approximately 65-70% of your clinical rotations with the emergency and critical care service and will have sole case responsibility after hours. The remaining time will be divided among anesthesia, internal medicine, diagnostic imaging and surgery with varying levels of case responsibility as well as opportunities to learn from registered specialists in multiple fields.

Interns will participate in weekly morbidity and mortality rounds, journal club, and didactic seminars which are supervised by registered specialists. Towards the end of the program the interns will be expected to produce a presentation for grand rounds. Support will be provided for the intern to undertake a research project with the opportunity to present this at the annual ANZCVS Science Week Conference. Interns will be involved with supervising and assessing final year students during their rotations on all services.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • provide excellent small animal services under the supervision of senior veterinarians in emergency and critical care, internal medicine, surgery, diagnostic imaging and anaesthesia
  • provide clinical teaching and support to veterinary students in the veterinary teaching hospital
  • supervise and perform routine treatment of hospitalised patients.

The Sydney School of Veterinary Science at the University of Sydney is ranked 2nd in the Southern hemisphere and 22nd in the world among veterinary faculties (QS rankings 2022). Regarding research, the faculty is the highest ranked veterinary school in Australia (ERA 5/5).
