Specialist Technician – Energy Technology/Mechatronics

The ‘Energy Technology’ and ‘Mechatronics’ Research Groups are integral parts of the Department for Mechanical Engineering, where leading academics and researchers investigate:

  • Fuel cells, batteries and related energy storage devices;
  • Electric machines, contacts, power electronics and control;
  • Micro-fluidics and ultrasonics;
  • Materials for solar energy and carbon capture;
  • Combustion research;
  • Cryogenics and superconductivity.

This diverse range of research topics, across a broad portfolio of new and ongoing research projects, and related undergraduate and postgraduate student projects, creates an exciting and evolving working environment for you to offer support and management of the shared laboratory space for these Groups.

Based on the Highfield Campus, you will support research and student projects, typically involving electrical/electronic equipment and some mechanical fitting activities, acting as the Area Safety Officer (ASO) for the laboratory, ensuring equipment maintenance and service, and elements of laboratory stock management (of common consumables etc.).

This post acts as the ‘front door’ to the shared laboratory space, delivering lab inductions and directly interfacing with students and staff, hence a personable and professional attitude with all parties is essential, as well as flexible nature to support related works (e.g. in the separate Cryogenics laboratory) when necessary.

To be successful you will have skill level equivalent to the achievement of HND, Degree, NVQ4 or basic professional qualification in technical, engineering or science and/or equivalent technical experience along with knowledge/experience of electrical systems, power electronics, analogue circuit skills, soldering, pcb design and related activities.

The University of Southampton is committed to fostering a culture of equality, diversity and inclusion. We welcome applications from suitably qualified candidates, and particularly encourage applications from candidates belonging to groups who are under-represented within technical posts at the University, including, but not limited to: people from Black and minority ethnic groups; and disabled people. We are a Disability Confident employer and the University is a founding signatory of the Athena SWAN Charter and holds an silver-level Athena SWAN award. We are a signatory to the Technicians Commitment and can provide opportunities for career development and mentoring.

There are a great range of benefits that includes a contributory pension scheme; holiday entitlement of 30 days plus 8 bank holidays and 6 additional holidays (closure days); subsidised health and fitness facilities on-site; cycle to work scheme; a range of discounts which include restaurants, retail outlets and entertainment.
