About the Scholarship
An exciting PhD scholarship opportunity is available for cutting-edge research into addressing Lunar Dust Mitigation Challenges. Working within Swinburne's world-leading research team for Science, Engineering and Technology, the candidate will focus on the urgent requirement to address this challenge by developing sustainable and innovative solutions for future space exploration.
Lunar dust and Martian dust are one of the major challenges and the number one environmental problem for interspatial colonization and travelling. The Apollo missions were famously riddled with issues from the Lunar dust. The dust is formed from continuous high energy impacts from micrometeorites and each of the layers have several metres of thickness. As Lunar dust resides in near-vacuum conditions, the grain surfaces are very reactive, sharp and pointy. The lack of gravity, or the existence of microgravity, they stuck easily to spacesuits, can clog mechanical joints and restricting movement. As space agencies across the world consider more crewed mission to the moon, removing lunar dust is one of the critical challenge for future space exploration.
To be suitable for this role you will need to have experience in the below key accountabilities:
- Preparing written research documents and oral presentations on research activities and outcomes
- Preparing and submitting publications from research activities to peer-reviewed journals and conferences
- Analytical and numerical analyses
- Participate in group development and research activities and contribute to other projects within the team
A Bachelor degree honours and/or a research master’s degree in a discipline relevant to the research topic (or equivalent).
